The Moore brothers–Caleb and Colten–had talked about winning gold and silver in the snowmobile freestyle at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado, but neither ended up on the medal stand Thursday night. Instead, both wound up in the hospital after serious crashes during their runs.

Near the end of Caleb’s first run, he did not fly far enough on a backflip and the front sleds dug into the landing ramp, sending Caleb over the handlebars and into a face-first landing, after which the snowmobile landed on him. Watch (the crash part starts around 1:00):

Caleb, 25, was knocked unconscious. Paramedics attended to him immediately. After regaining consciousness, he began feeling worse and was taken to the hospital. There, he was diagnosed with a concussion, according to the New York Times.

The Times reported that during the night, doctors found internal bleeding around Caleb’s heart. He was airlifted to Grand Junction, Colorado, and underwent emergency surgery. A spokeswoman told the Times on Friday morning that Caleb had sustained a heart contusion and was in the intensive care unit.

About 30 minutes later, on the same ramp where Caleb crashed, Colten, 23, the defending gold medalist in the event, over-rotated on a back flip, fell off the snowmobile and landed hard on his tail. As he lay on the ground, he pointed to his right hip.

As with his brother moments before, paramedics attended to him, eventually putting him onto a gurney for an ambulance ride to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a separated pelvis. Fortunately, no surgery is required, X Games reported Friday.

Earlier in the day, Caleb, who has sustained many injuries snowmobiling and riding ATVs, told the Times, “You try not to get hurt, but in this sport it’s kind of the price you pay for not having to work 9 to 5.”

Daniel Bodin also crashed during Thursday night’s competition. He walked away, though a photo on his Facebook page showed his left arm in a cast. He also wrote this: “Caleb & Colten, I hope you get well soon!”

The night ended with Levi LaVallee winning the snowmobile freestyle to take the first gold medal awarded at X Games Aspen. Hopefully, the remaining medals will be awarded without any more crashes.
