It may not have been the most thrilling performance at the X Games, but as far as Tanner Foust and Greg Tracy are concerned, their feat was the coolest. Both drivers set a world record by driving rally cars almost simultaneously through a 66-foot tall double loop designed to mimic a Hot Wheels track.

“That was pretty hardcore: the 7 Gs … I almost felt my chin hit my lap, I think, in the loop,” Foust told ESPN, which stages the annual four-day action sports festival in Los Angeles. “I felt like I was in a toy.”

The track, modeled after an actual Hot Wheels track, measured about 600 yards. The drivers shattered the previous record for the largest loop in a car, set last year when Chinese driver Li Yatao conquered a 42-foot-tall loop in Shanghai.

If Foust and Tracy made their X Games demonstration stunt look easy, that’s because they had been working on the trick for much of the past year.

Scientists determined that they had to negotiate the loop at speeds between 48 and 52 mph for the greatest chance of success — and to reduce potential for disaster. Both drivers were required to pass G-force tests in jets beforehand, because 7 Gs is incredibly powerful and can cause a person to black out.

After safely rounding the loop, both drivers soared over a jump and their joy ride was deemed a resounding success.

Said Tracy: “That was absolutely the coolest thing I’ve ever done. It was a handful trying to land it and get it slowed down. I knew Tanner was right behind me and I was just hoping we weren’t going to tangle before we got to the end.”
