RallyCross driver injured during spectacular crash at X Games

The X Games typically feature a handful of dramatic crashes and the most spectacular through Friday involved RallyCross driver Toomas Heikkinen, who was hospitalized after coming up short on a 50-foot jump and colliding head-on into steel support beams. The 21-year-old Finnish driver suffered a fractured left ankle. He had complained of abdominal pain but a CT scan revealed no further injuries, an X Games spokesman said Friday night.

Because the jump’s landing ramp is constructed of steel, there was no give upon impact, which collapsed the front portion of Heikkinen’s Ford Fiesta.

After the crash Heikkinen, an X Games rookie, crawled from his car and was treated on the scene before being transported to a local hospital, where he was scheduled to undergo ankle surgery.

RallyCross is a cross between rally racing and motocross and features lots of tight turns and jumps. The final will be held Sunday, the fourth and final day of X Games competition. Heikkinen is not expected to compete in the final.
