2011 was a year filled with memorable moments including Kelly Slater’s 11th world title, Olympic status being granted in multiple snow disciplines, several new tricks were landed, a massive swell in Tahiti, world-records being shattered, a new women’s surfing world champ…the list goes on.
With all the great stories in 2011 came some NOT so top stories as well. Here’s our top 5 most ridiculous, unfortunate, awkward, over-hyped, and miscalculated stories from 2011.
5. Mr. Awkward Matt Wilkerson.
Matty Wilko is both a top 5 best and worst story from 2011. It’s the tale of Wilco’s as he became one of surfing’s most colorful personalities. For Wilco 2011 started with the Quik Pro in Australia when he made headlines not for his solid surfing but for his preferred method of transportation to the beach.(Roller blades)
Later in the year Wilco made a name for himself by charging the massive swell in Tahiti during the Billabong Pro. 2011 was the year of the wetsuit for Wilko as he unveiled a variety of wetsuits specially designed for the different stops on the tour including a dollar bill suit, a tie dye suit, a camouflage suit, and last but not least the notorious boob suit.
The Australian playboy documented his awkward ways on his personal blog out-2-brunch.
4. The unbelievably unfortunate timing of the Mountain Biker in South Africa.
While at a weekend competition near Albert Falls Dam in South Africa, unlucky mountain biker Evan van der Spuy was head-butted by a red hartebeest from out of nowhere. Fortunately for Van der Spuy the amazing incident was captured on video by another rider who was wearing a helmet cam. He turned his misfortune into celebrity as this video was one of the top viral videos in 2011.
3. The over-hyped Pastranathon.
Dubbed as four days of mayhem centered around X Games 17 in LA and a Nascar race in Indianapolis, Travis Pastrana attempted to compete in both during the same weekend. “The Pastranathon” became the center of attention as ESPN built their marketing material including a national commercial based on Pastrana’s wild weekend. Pastranathon ended as soon as it started when Pastrana broke his right foot attempting the 720 TP roll during “Moto X Best Trick.” Although Pastranathon was extremely over-hyped in typical Pastrana fashion he found a way to qualify for the finals of RallyCross the last day of X Games by using hand controls.
2. Shaun White’s home collection.
Shaun White’s newest collaboration with Target, the Shaun White Home collection, hit stores for a limited time December 26. The collection, features a variety of items to decorate kids’ rooms, including curtains, bedding and lamps.
Ok Shaun, it’s getting to be a bit ridiculous. We understand wanting to capitalize as much as possible on your career while you’re still relative but bed sheets and curtains? At some point there should be a line between good judgement and going to far. For example, a good call which made sense was inking a deal with BFG to learn to drive. Bad call, Shaun’s cameo in the Hollywood film Friends with Benefits. If you haven’t seen it yet, trust us it’s a good thing Shaun is still the best snowboarder on the planet because acting is not his strong point.
1. The ASP’s slight miscalculation.
The stage was set, the celebration was grand, Kelly Slater clinched an unprecedented 11th world title with a third-round triumph during the Rip Curl Pro Search in San Francisco. Not so fast, the ASP, in a monumentally embarrassing screw-up, incorrectly figured the mathematics of the world title race. Slater learned of the mistake from a fan on Twitter.
The trophy was temporarily given back to the ASP until Slater made things right by winning his next heat officially clinching the world title. The error eventually lead to the resignation of CEO Brodie Carr, who had overseen all the aforementioned changes.
Other than the monumental error, the ASP had a very successful year, getting epic waves at virtually every WCT stop including the largest swell in recent memory during the Billabong Pro Tahiti at Teahupoo.
