Brothers on the Run: Surfing in Alaska

According to the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), the average water temperature along the northern Alaskan coast is 30 degrees. That’s over 20 degrees colder than Southern California’s coldest winter temperature. Despite freezing water, Travis Rice, Ian Walsh, John and Eric Jackson braved the icy ocean for a surf mission in the fourth episode of Brothers on the Run.

The crew drove to the end of Highway 1, the most northern highway in the western hemisphere, then hopped on a boat and journeyed five more hours north before finding a groomed Alaskan swell. Big wave surfer, Ian Walsh, was in his element and schooled the pro snowboarders on every wave. Walsh was pumped on the surf excursion and said, “I was so fired up, there was nowhere else I would rather be. Alaska was insane.”

After the surf expedition, the crew headed south to Alyeska Resort and tried their hand at the end of season pond skimming contest called the Slush Cup. Despite their awesome attire and obvious stoke, the slush proved too much for the pros and each sank to the bottom of the frigid pond.
