Levi LaVallee wins gold in crash-marred Winter X snowmobile freestyle

After three crashes and two serious injuries, the snowmobile freestyle event at X Games Aspen on Thursday night was won by Levi LaVallee, a veteran snowmobiler who missed the last two Winter X Games because of injuries.

LaVallee won the first gold medal of X Games Aspen by overtaking Joe Parsons by three-tenths of a point on his 75-second run.

Take a look at his winning run:

The competition was marred by the crashes of Caleb and Colten Moore, brothers from Texas who were both hospitalized with serious injuries. Daniel Bodin also crashed but walked away, though he had a cast on his left arm in a photo on his Facebook page.

“I feel terrible about the accidents that happened,” LaVallee said afterward. “But I’m happy I put down a solid run and came out on top to win gold again. It’s like, ‘Pinch me! Is this for real?’” He won gold in 2008.

Parsons took silver and Justin Hoyer won bronze.
