Sean Pawling combined his favorite winter sport with his favorite musical instrument and came up with a hysterical rendition of the classical piece “Ride of the Valkyries,” made famous in the movie “Apocalypse Now.” Pawling plays the song on his trombone while skiing down the slope. And now, the trombone-playing skier/singer-songwriter is becoming famous himself, as his 15-second video has gone viral on Reddit. Take a look and listen:
The idea for this stunt came when Pawling purchased a pBone, a plastic trombone that is durable and inexpensive, and doesn’t come with the worry of wrecking a good trombone. He thought, why not combine skiing with playing music, his two loves?
So at Sierra-at-Tahoe, a Northern California ski resort, Pawling told his cousin where to go and tape, and he went for it.
“I have been very surprised by the crazy reaction,” Pawling wrote in an email. “The video that got popular was literally the first take and the first run that I did playing trombone and skiing at the same time…
“The viewer reactions really surprised me: intelligent arguments about the Doppler effect have ensued (my pitch bends down a whole step when I pass the camera, but since I start playing an octave down before I pass, people think that that is the Doppler effect too).”
Pawling, based in Los Angeles, is currently working on his first full-length album and hoping to get his name out there.
If nothing else, he has his 15 seconds of fame.
