Hana Beaman, Leanne Pelosi, Robin Van Gyn, and the girls of the highly acclaimed P.S. Webisodes spent the 2012 season chasing snowstorms, hiking steep lines, and dropping cliffs in the backcountry while filming for their newest project, “Intervals.” The short web-based film documents the girls getting after it in the steep and deep in Revelstoke, British Columbia; Colorado; Mt. Baker, Washington; Japan, and numerous locations in between. “Intervals” is easily one of the most progressive women’s films to date because it highlights the technical prowess of each of the leading ladies featured in the film. We caught up with Beaman, the mastermind behind this project, and Van Gyn for insight into what went into filming this women’s edit. Check out what they said in the latest edition of “Say Anything.”
How did the idea for “Intervals” come to be?
We originally were just planning to do webisodes, but as the season went on, we didn’t really have another outlet to put our footage in, so we figured that we should just make our own short film with the ladies who were a part of the P.S. Webisodes.
It was a product of P.S., really. Hana and I had always said through the season, “If we had enough footage, we would do a short.” It goes without saying that we ended up having enough footage to put something cool together with the help of Leanne’s footage also.
What were your personal goals with the film?
I wanted us to have a good platform to show our riding and to show who we are as individual riders. Also, to have something that made people stoked on backcountry riding, and that really shows what we do all season. There are a lot of rail-centric films and edits for women, but I wanted girls stoked on getting out in the mountains and trying more pow riding if possible.
The main goal was to create something good for women’s snowboarding. On top of that, of course for myself I wanted to have a progressive part and to put something out there that was going to encourage progression in the sport.
What are your favorite parts of “Intervals”?
I really love the intro, the dreamy feel. It really reminds me of the season and everybody that was a part of it. It just makes me smile.
The part that actually resonates with me the most is when Leanne talks about finding a balance between pushing it and being scared. Also all the little lifestyles with the crew together having fun reminds me of the amazing time Hana, Leanne, and I had through the season. There were so many good times and great adventures.
Where did you each of you film primarily?
We spent A LOT of time up in the Whistler [British Columbia] backcountry, because that seemed to be where most of the good conditions were this season and a lot of the girls are based around there. We know it pretty well so it makes us more productive. But there was some stuff from the interior BC too–lots of fun out there as well as Red Mountain Pass, Colorado.
Robin: Personally I filmed mostly in Whistler. Hana and I had an insanely productive trip to Colorado and then all three of us ended up in Revelstoke a couple of times for some powder.
Do you ladies plan to film a follow up to “Intervals” this season; if so, who will be included?
We are hoping to, and we will be figuring things out the next bit, talking with sponsors and such. If all goes well, I’m looking forward to another awesome season with these ladies, and to hopefully include a few new faces.
It’s hard to say. The way we did it last year was to just see what we have after P.S. is done and go from there. That way you are never committed to putting out something if it’s not A+. We will be doing the web series again, and we will be adding a few riders, but that is still in the process.
What are you looking forward to this season?
I’m looking forward to picking up where we left off. I had a few things I really wanted to try last year but the season kind of ended sooner than I wanted. So just looking forward to getting back out there! Also, getting to check out some new places. That’s always rad!
Riding with Hana and Leanne Leanne–we always have a ridiculous time together. Also I am aiming to get up to Alaska to do some heli. I am especially looking forward to that if it happens.
