Hip-hop stars Macklemore and Ryan Lewis played a sold out show in Breckenridge, Colorado, last Saturday for a celebratory concert sponsored by the Dew Tour. The Seattle-based Macklemore and Lewis have been generating quite the buzz for their highly acclaimed first album, “The Heist,” and are carving a niche in the rap game with their quirky, honest lyrics, electro beats, inspiring instrumentals, and energetic stage presence. For the past two-and-a-half months, the duo has performed over sixty sold-out shows during the Heist World Tour and finished things off in Breckenridge.
During an athlete meet-and-greet before the performance, we met with Macklemore, AKA Ben Haggerty, and snuck in a few questions with the star about touring, snowboarding, thrift shopping, and more. Check out what he had to say below and see the action from the sold out show by clicking the photo above.
What makes your performance at the Dew Tour special?
This is the last show of a really long tour, so I’m looking forward to leaving it all on the stage and having fun and celebrating the fact that we’re going home tomorrow, so you know we’re going to go extra hard tonight.
Are you a skier or a snowboarder?
I am snowboarder. I went last year with my girlfriend. It was definitely a time of patience. I learned a lot of patience when I went with her. But I’ve done it since I was about thirteen years old.
Are you familiar with the ski and snowboard scene, and is this your first time performing at a snow-related event?
I don’t keep up with the scene exactly, but if I’m watching TV and I stumble across people snowboarding, I’m going to watch it for sure. This is the first time I’ve performed for the Dew Tour.
Do you have any favorite athletes competing here at the Dew Tour?
You know what, we didn’t sleep last night because we were in Vegas, on tour. So when we got here, I really wanted to check out what was going on and see what was going on because I’m a fan, but I slept all day. So I actually don’t know who’s at the Dew Tour. I wish I would have had time.
What’s your favorite part of touring and how long have you been on the road?
We’ve been on the road for two-and-a-half months. My favorite part of touring is just getting out and playing the music that people have connected enough with–enough that they have bought tickets to see our show. And the energy is just so crazy at our shows. The fans really give it 100 percent, so I just love interacting with the fans and doing what we do.
How often do you actually make it to the thrift shop?
Too often.
Like weekly or?
More often than that. I actually had to chill out while we were on the road because of the tour bus. I was actually filling the bus with second-hand clothes. Like there wasn’t any more room for things. But yes, I usually go thrift shopping three to four times a week.
With the rise and popularity of your chart topping song “Thrift Shop,” do you still think, “This is f****** awesome?”
Of course. Absolutely.
