Snowboarder Shaun White cuts his famous red locks

Even the casual winter sports fan knows who two-time Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Shaun White is–and they likely know him for his fiery red locks. His nickname is the “Flying Tomato,” after all, and many a media outlet calls his locks his “trademark.”

But all good things must come to an end–and in this case, for a good cause, as White revealed on Tuesday through a Facebook post that he has cut off his shiny red tresses for the charity Locks of Love, which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to illness.

“I’ve been thinking about this one for a while, but it’s for a good cause, so I’m going to do it,” White says in the video. “Somebody needs it more than I do.”

White appears slightly shaken in the video as the hairdresser, who he calls “Israel,” ties his long hair into a ponytail and then cuts it off. “I’m still panicking,” White says at one point.

White also mentions in the video that he hadn’t told anyone about his plan and that he hopes to “mind freak” everyone with his short hairstyle.

Thirty minutes after he posted the video on Facebook, it already had about 300 comments, which ranged from “We are really proud of you.” to “Ohh no. You broke my heart. Why?”

White is coming off a win at the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships in Breckenridge, Colorado, over the weekend. He only just returned to competition after recently undergoing surgery on his meniscus in his right knee.

Thanks to slopestyle being added to the program at the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia, it’s possible that White could win two gold medals there.
