Two-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White, an action sports superstar with the appearance and stature more befitting a rock star, was charged with public intoxication and vandalism early Sunday at a Nashville hotel.

A police affidavit states that White, 26, also tried to attack a hotel guest who pursued him as he left the hotel. The guest, who said White appeared to have been intoxicated, claimed that after he had informed White that he had telephoned police, White collided with the man and fell and struck his head.

The affidavit also states that White appeared to be drunk.

An arrest mug shot (above right) reveals White, who was treated and released at a nearby hospital, sporting a black eye and with his long red hair tied back.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department was called to the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel at 2 a.m. Sunday. The department, in a news release, said it received a call “regarding an intoxicated man, reportedly White, who allegedly pulled a fire alarm at the hotel, which caused the evacuation of all guests.”

According to a separate affidavit, White also was reported to have broken a hotel telephone. Hotel management refused to comment directly about White.

White was in Nashville to attend musician Patrick Carney’s wedding Saturday night, according to People magazine.

According to the Associated Press, police say White was given the opportunity to sign misdemeanor citations but refused, and instead was issued an arrest warrant. He was released by police late Monday afternoon on his own recognizance. His court date was scheduled for Oct. 10.

Early Tuesday morning White issued an apology statement on his Facebook page: “I want to apologize for the unwise choices I made over the weekend and for any inconvenience it caused my family, friends, business partners, the hotel, and their guests. I was celebrating a happy occasion with a ton of family and friends and got carried away. I’m truly sorry for my poor behavior.”

White, also a star skateboarder, earned Olympic gold medals for his prowess in the snowboarding halfpipe at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics.

Over the years the Southern California phenom with the long and lustrous hair has been a perennial medalist in both sports at the X Games. He has a combined 16 X Games gold medals.

More recently he has been enjoying more of a Hollywood lifestyle, wearing expensive leather clothing and spending lots of time in Hollywood, mingling with celebrities. He has been romantically linked to Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli.

Said Pat Bridges, editor of Snowboarder magazine: “I won’t go on the record saying if this is the first time Shaun White has exhibited such behavior as an adult. But I can say for certain that it is the first time he has been arrested for it.”
