While most surfers flock to Oahu’s North Shore every winter to test their mettle in some of the biggest and baddest waves on the planet, the Brazilian contingent and their home-groomed small-wave attack have been putting on an equally entertaining sideshow at some of the less-than-lethal waves on offer.
Led by phenom Gabriel Medina, several single-wave clips have been bouncing around the surf world since the Hawaii season started back in November. During down-time between swells at the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa, Gabs taught himself one of surfing’s most technical maneuvers, the frontside backflip, first pulled by North Shore local Flynn Novak.
The latest flip clip comes from an unheard young Brazilian named Yago Dora, who nailed his version at Rocky Point.
And finally, a backside rotation from soon-to-be World Tour rookie Filipe Toledo. While this may not technically be a flip, nobody is gonna split hairs with an air of this size.
