While us folks in the Northern Hemisphere have been basking in one hell of a scorching hot summer, our compadres in the underworld are just starting to dig themselves out of winter’s cold grip, like South Africa’s Brendon Gibbens, seen here surfing around his home of Kommetjie on the outskirts of Capetown. Brendon is at a crossroads in his young career, having to decide between traveling the globe scrounging for qualifying points on the ASP World Qualifying Series, or filming freesurfing clips to build his profile and keep his name on the radar of international surf fandom. Many a young talent has been faced with the same predicament, and for the Southern Hemisphere winter season he has chosen to focus on the latter, releasing periodic web clips for our ocular enjoyment. Here is his winter highlight reel, full of crisp tubes, clean hacks, and some seriously monster aerials. I think we can all agree that watching that was better than watching him wiggle for that extra 0.5 in a yellow contest jersey on a 2-foot wave in Brazil.
