Every Friday for the past three weeks Lost Enterprises has been releasing chapters from its brand new documentary, “Ward Stories,” which focuses on Chris Ward, one of surfing’s most infamous characters. As if on cue, Ward wrote what could be the last chapter of the documentary Thursday by winning the Rip Curl Padang Cup and reportedly proposing to his girlfriend once on the sand.
“I bought the ring and was thinking, ‘How should I propose?’ I told myself if I won this contest I was gonna do this right here on the stage, so I guess it was meant to be,” he said in his post-win interview.
Wardo won the final with a miracle ten-point wave with less than two minutes left to beat local Balinese hero Mega Semadhi.
The Rip Curl Padang Cup is “On when it’s On,” according to event posters, and after a much anticipated swell filled in overnight, lighting up the Bukit Peninsula, the go ahead was given at dawn.
Surfer magazine’s Jason Childs took some excellent photos of the event from the channel as perfect 6- to 8-foot green tubes warped down the reef at Padang Padang. There were only four surfers in the water instead of the usual hordes that clog the lineup, making for some amazing scenery. Also check out the official event photos here.
