He may not have won the final, but everyone on the beach– including event winner Willian Cardoso– knew that Brazilian Filipe Toledo was the best surfer at the Burton Toyota Surfest.
The ASP 6-star wrapped up in rippable head-high beachbreak at Newcastle on Australia’s southeast coast. In the semifinal Toledo dropped the event’s only 10-point ride for two massive air-reverses. Then, in the final, he earned a 9.5 for a giant backside rotation. But later in the heat, he essentially handed Willian Cardoso the win after accidentally dropping in on him. Even still, Cardoso barely managed to squeak past Toledo’s 9.5 with two low-scoring waves.
While Toledo is still a junior, he managed to burst onto the world stage at last summer’s US Open Pro Junior where he out-punted a stacked final that included Kolohe Andino, John Florence, and Conner Coffin.
BURTON TOYOTA PRO FINAL RESULT:
Willian Cardoso (BRA) 10.16 def. Filipe Toledo (BRA) 9.50
