Despite that Hurley’s takeover of the current Nike surf team is slated for Jan. 1, some of their premier riders have already jumped ship. Thanks to Instagram, we can show you some photographic evidence from the North Shore of Oahu, where the entire surf industry is currently camped out for the Triple Crown of Surfing.
Santa Cruz, California’s Nat Young was one of Nike’s future stars, having locked in a spot as a rookie on next year’s World Tour. Now his blades have a new logo. Nat’s caption reads, “old boards, new look.”
Kauai’s Koa Smith is also one of the rising stars that Nike was bankrolling. His caption read, “the new look!” You may notice that the boards still have Nike logos–they’re just smaller and placed on the rail because they are now a shoe-only sponsor.
Aussie Julian Wilson, one of Nike’s biggest names, has already re-stickered his quiver, and even taken to the sky with his new logo. This was shot yesterday next to Pipeline at Off the Wall.
Lensman Aaron Lieber posted this photomontage with the following caption: “I wanted to thank everyone at Nike for an amazing three years! All the trips, waves, and fun memories will be forever in my mind and on my Instagram!”
So it sounds like the Hurley house might be getting a bit more crowded, eh? One has to wonder what this means for original Hurley riders like Ace Buchan, Brett Simpson, and Yadin Nicol with all this new World Tour talent coming aboard. Hurley will have roughly a quarter of the World Tour surfers on their team for next season. Also, what effect will that have on Hurley’s non-tour team, which includes Rob Machado, Evan Geiselman, Pete Devries, and many others? My guess would be that there will be some cuts, considering that Hurley plans to honor all of Nike’s contracts. Kolohe Andino, for instance, signed a big 10-year contract just last year.
