After a series of closely fought battles, 11-time world champion Kelly Slater bested Australian Joel Parkinson in the final showdown at the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles, California, on Thursday, marking the 50th World Tour title of Slater’s career. But with the world’s five top-ranked surfers all making the quarterfinals, no one surfer made a big move in the overall world title race.
Sitting right in the middle of the World Tour schedule, Trestles is crucial for both points and momentum. Indeed, Mick Fanning’s win here in 2009 sent him on a tear that saw him catch best friend Parkinson, who had a massive lead in the rankings at the time, to steal the world title.
Slater has quite the track record at Trestles, hoisting its trophy a record number of times, six of them since Hurley began sponsoring the event. (Although it’s difficult to determine exactly how many times Slater has won in Trestles, considering the event there has had so many different forms.) His very first pro victory there was in 1990, when it was called the Body Glove Surfbout, and his win on Thursday marks his third straight there.
In terms of the overall world title race, Fanning still holds his lead thanks to his semifinals appearance, but he is now followed more closely by finalists Slater and Parko. The top five surfers have also begun to take a commanding lead over the rest of the pack.
The next ASP World Tour event starts in just one week, on Sept. 28, in Hossegor, France.
