Meola and Layer on offseason training

As we patiently await the third installment of the Kustom Airstrike series to flood our computer screens, two of the $50,000 winner-take-all trip’s stars, Matt Meola and Albee Layer, have been hard at work training for the winter with a new coach. Sort of. While the training skit in this clip is obviously a joke, the fact is the two have a lot to prepare for while their home reefs on the North Shore of Maui slowly awake from their summer slumber.

Rumors of a powerful El Nino winter season are already beginning to circulate, and to understand what this portends, just recall the winter of ’09 and ’10, which produced some of the biggest and cleanest swells on record in the Northern Hemisphere. Add that potential to the momentum Layer and Meola are carrying from last winter’s performances at Jaws and other spots that will remain nameless, and you can bet the boys are doing some actual cross-training, sans German muscle guru.
