As 2012 fades into memory and the new year is upon us, let’s take a look at how the stars of action sports rang in the holiday, via Instagram.
With a massive WNW swell hitting Hawaii and coinciding with light winds, many of big-wave surfing’s elite scrapped their party plans and showed up at Jaws and Waimea for a couple crazy paddle sessions.
Jamie O’Brien was one of the Oahu boys who hopped a plane to Maui to paddle massive Jaws. @whoisjob

World Tour surfer John John Florence was another who took a 30-minute plane ride from home to find this. @surfline

“It’s going off” and this photo was posted by local charger Matt Meola. @mattmeola
Winter swell and snow greeted the West Coast, where many opted for the mountains over the sand, including pro surfers Coco Ho, Nage Melamed, Quincy Davis, and Kelia Moniz.
Snow bunnies. @keliamoniz
If you cold brave the frigid air, California also saw some great surf to start the year. Here photographer Morgan Maasen posts up at Rincon.

Meanwhile 11-time world champ Kelly Slater and big-wave surfer Shane Dorian opted out of the big-wave scene altogether, and took their lady friends to Staples Center for the New Year’s Day Lakers game in Los Angeles.
What swell? @kellyslater
And finally, a very happy New Year from pro surfer/model Alana Blanchard.
