Over the weekend the Surf Industry Manufacturer Association (SIMA) held their 23rd annual Waterman’s Ball, which honors a select few for their achievements in the world of surf. The three categories of honorees are Environmentalist, Lifetime Achievement, and Waterman of the Year.
Past recipients of the coveted Waterman of the Year title have included Tom Curren (2010), Andy Irons (2005), Kelly Slater (2004), Gerry Lopez (1999), and many other big names. This year the honor was bestowed upon Patrick Shane Dorian for his amazing career, which includes a World Tour victory at Mundaka in 2000, a starring role in a Hollywood film–the largely forgettable “In God’s Hands”–in 1998, and his current role as one of the most respected big-wave surfers on the planet. The following is his highlight reel, which played at the event before Shane gave his speech.
