A new documentary titled Splinters premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. The film, shot and directed by a talented young Santa Barbara native named Adam Pesce, uncovers an incredible story that has taken place in a remote village in Papua New Guinea. The film raises many relevant questions about traveling surfers and our effects on the places we go.

“In the 1980′s an intrepid Australian pilot left behind a surfboard in the seaside village of Vanimo, Papua New Guinea.

Twenty years on, surfing is not only a pillar of village life but also a means to prestige. With no access to economic or educational advancement, let alone running water and power, village life is hermetic.

A spot on the Papua New Guinea national surfing team is the way to see the wider world; the only way.”

The film will be making its West Coast premiere tonight at the Newport Beach Film Festival at the Lido Theatre, 6pm. Hope to see you there.
