In 2008, Clay Marzo’s profile film, Just Add Water documented his lifelong struggles with Asperger’s Syndrome, a rare form of autism. Despite the social setbacks, Clay was gifted with incredible physical ability and zen-like focus on certain tasks– most notably, surfing. In the water, Clay is able to focus on one aspect of his surfing over and over until it’s close to perfection.

As you watch this video, you’ll notice that Clay is all about repetition– lefts, and plenty of them. Any tube on offer will be threaded, regardless of size. And anytime a barrel fails to present itself, he proceeds to execute his mechanical fin-blows.

While the lifestyle of a freesurfer fits Clay far better than life under the microscope wearing a contest jersey, one can’t help but wonder what could have been– if only the tour consisted of slabby lefthanders in Indo.
