Vans steps up to save the U.S. Open of Surfing

More good news for surf fans: the uncertain future of the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California, seems to be secure now that Vans and mega event organizer IMG (International Management Group) have stepped in to sponsor the event going forward.

Nike/Hurley’s announcement last year that it was pulling out of the Open was just one in a series of surf industry blows, which also included the cancellation or downgrade of several Tour events.

In the past week, however, Oakley announced that it would sponsor a World Tour event at Keramas in Bali, marking the first good news we’ve heard surrounding competitive surfing in a while. And now with Vans and IMG signing on to sponsor the biggest event on U.S. soil for at least three years, it seems the future of contest surfing is a bit brighter.
