  • Hurricane damage forces cancellation of Quiksilver music festival, Quik Pro still on

In a press release which you can read below, Quik has confirmed that despite Hurricane Irene's damage to the Long Beach NY area, the Quiksilver Pro, stop number 6 of 11, will begin as scheduled next monday September 4th. The coinciding music festival including a performance by Wayne Coyne and the fabulous Flaming Lips, and skate events including a vert comp with Quik rider Tony Hawk have been cancelled. Your can go here to check out the cool things that aren't happening anymore.

This was a close call for surfers like Kai Otton, Adam Melling, and Freddy P, as they are just outside the bubble for qualification, and this event is their last chance to climb into the top 32. Had the hurricane caused a full cancellation they would be shit out of luck.

No word yet on wether or not these changes of plan will stop Dane Reynolds and Bobby Martinez from showing up. Both opted out of J-bay and Tahiti, but have committed to this event due to sponsor obligations. Bobby now rides for an MMA clothing company based in NYC and Dane rides for Quik, who is throwing the shabang-abang.

    from the ASP:

LONG BEACH, New York / USA (Tuesday, August 30, 2011) - An important update from Long Beach -- Quiksilver is working closely with the City of Long Beach to preserve the heart of the ASP World Tour surf contest scheduled to start on Sunday, September 4 in light of the impact of Hurricane Irene and concerns for the Long Beach community, which suffered significant damage from the storm. The Quiksilver Pro is scheduled to start its 11-day "holding period" on Monday, September 5. The Quiksilver Pro Trials presented by Unsound Surf will run on Sunday, September 4.

The situation has been changing daily, and we recognize that City resources are focused on hurricane restoration and clean up as first priority. In that context, we have been informed by the City that the festival and music components of the event are no longer achievable.

The Quiksilver Pro NY is first and foremost about the surf contest and Long Beach has an incredible surfing tradition and spirit. We are committed to holding the ASP tour event at Long Beach so that together we can promote the sport by bringing together the best surfers in the world to this terrific community.

  • Video surveillance of Jordy Smith's Billabong Pro victory at J-Bay

Jordy Smith's Billabong Pro victory on Sunday vaulted him past Kelly Slater into the top spot in the ASP ratings. The third-year pro broke into tears after his hard fought win.

It's been a long road for Smith. After some white-knuckle moments during his rookie season that fed a ruthless press, he's managed to shake the critics, locate a few toeholds and start climbing his way up the ratings wall.

The evidence will show Jordy surfing strongly throughout the event. His most impressive victory was without question his last minute heroics versus Bede Durbidge. Contrast Jordy's amazing comeback to Dane Reynolds complete meltdown against Taj Burrow and you have a very telling picture.

Smith is likely to take more heat now that he's, once again, the world's biggest target. But from his elevated position it's much easier for him to fire back...and silence them.

Here's the tale of the tape from the historic final day at J-Bay.

Quarterfinal number 1: Jordy Smith takes down the always dangerous Adriano de Souza of Brazil.

Quarterfinal number 2: Bede Durbidge ends the amazing run of South African wild card Sean Holmes.

Quarterfinal number 3: Dane Reynolds cracks under the pressure of a Taj Burrow assault.

Quarterfinal number 4: Aussie Adam Melling knocks out the last remaining goofyfooter, Damien Hobgood.

Semifinal number 1: Jordy Smith makes his amazing last-minute charge to get past Bede Durbidge.

Semifinal number 2: Adam Melling upsets Taj Burrow to make is first-ever ASP final and solidify Jordy's new lead.

THE FINAL: Jordy Smith beats Adam Melling to take his first-ever ASP victory on a historic day in South Africa.

  • Jordy Smith Takes Maiden Win and ASP Ratings' Lead at Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay

JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa (Sunday, July 18, 2010) - JordySmith (ZAF), 22, has claimed his maiden ASP elite victory, taking outthe Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay over Adam Melling (AUS), 25, in front ofa capacity hometown crowd.

Event No. 4 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, the Billabong ProJeffreys Bay was nothing but blaring Vuvuzelas and roars from the bluffas these two titans went tit-for-tat in an incredible Final exchange. The young South African proved the victor, dominating from the outsetand securing an emotional first win.

"This is the best day of my life," Smith said. "The crowd on the beachhas been supporting me the last few days and hearing the cheers and theVuvuzelas just gets me fired up to perform. It feels like they'repushing me along. I couldn't have done it without them."

The most experienced surfer at Jeffreys Bay, Smith left very little tochance in the Final against Melling, opening his account with a blazing8.90 before backing it up with some scintillating forehand surfing fora 9.03. The combination of scores (17.93 out of a possible 20) provedinsurmountable for Melling.

"I knew the swell was dying and I had to take advantage of every wavethat came through," Smith said. "Adam (Melling) is such a dangeroussurfer. He's been in form all day and I knew that if he got the waves,he would get the scores. I went out there knowing I had to open upstrong."

After taking the ratings' lead over former nine-time ASP World ChampionKelly Slater (USA), 38, yesterday, Smith solidified his position as theASP World No. 1 with today's emphatic victory.

"It definitely is a different feeling," Smith said. "To be chasing thelead and defending the lead are two different things. It's a long yearahead and you can't count anyone out until it's over. I'm going toenjoy this feeling for now."

Smith's Final's berth almost never was, as the big South African was comboed by lethal Australian Bede Durbidge (AUS), 27, with four minutes remaining in their Semifinal clash. Catching two waves in under a minute, Smith unloaded a barrage of aerials and forehand blasts to claw his way back into the lead.

"I'm still not too sure what happened - it's all a blur," Smith said."I got that first one where I did the little grab air that I didn'tthink was good, but the judges scored the whole wave pretty well. ThenI backed it up and put everything I had into it."

Melling's "Cinderella" climb to the Finals was nothing short ofsensational. Rated a lowly 41st on the ASP World Title Race rankingsheading into Jeffreys Bay, the 2010 ASP Dream Tour rookie powered hisway through five rounds of competition before coming short in theFinal. His Runner-Up finish sees him bumped up to ASP World No. 19,well inside the safety zone for the dreaded mid-year field reduction.

"The ocean didn't cooperate with me in the Final so that's a shame butI couldn't be happier," Melling said. "We had amazing waves and to getthe best result of my career is huge. I came into Jeffreys with a longroad ahead if I were to make the mid-year cut-off, and now that I'm19th, I feel like I have a bit of a buffer heading into Tahiti. Iworked really hard to get here and I want to stay here."

Durbidge suffered one of the hardest losses of the event, having defeatsnatched from the jaws of victory by a last-minute crusade by Smith.Despite the bitter loss, Durbidge's Equal 3rd vaults him from 10th to7th on the ASP World Title Race rankings heading into the fifth eventof the year.

"I had him comboed with only four minutes to go," Durbidge said. "Hetook off on that one-footer and pulled that 'Superman' air and finishedoff well, then came out and got another one. I think he got two wavesin a minute or something. It's a hard way to lose, but Semifinals is mybest result of the year and it's something to build on. The focus is onTahiti now."

Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, consistently wowed audiences with his performancefrom Round 1 onwards, collecting the event's highest heat total inyesterday's Round 4. Despite today's Semifinal loss at the hands ofMelling, the Western Australian moves up to ASP World No. 2 headinginto Tahiti.

  • Mr. Price Pro Scores Perfect Bellito Bay

    Mr. Price Pro
There's a bit of role reversal happening on the ASP world stage this week. While the ASP World Tour is underway in Brazil in clean-ish 4-to-6 foot mush burgers, the WQS has morphed into the actual Dream Tour, if only for a day, as the 6-Star Mr. Price Pro is scoring absolutely flawless Ballito Bay in South Africa.

Usually, the Mr. Price Pro takes place in Durban, which typically dishes out 2-to3 foot slop. But this year officials wisely decided to move the event 20 miles north in the hopes of scoring better surf, a decision that has proven to be a great one as the event got underway just in time to catch one of the best swells of the year.

  • Melling Knighted In Scotland

    Cold Water Classic
Adam Melling won the 6-Star Prime O'Neill Coldwater Classic Scotland presented by Swatch, and in the process was knighted and given a sword. From the pictures the event looked pretty rad, the waves were a solid 5 to 6 feet, and there were castles in the backdrop. Lets not forget, he was freaking knighted and given a sword. That definetly has to be on of the best prizes in competitive surfing, it for sure beats the golden railroad spike Freddy P was given for winning the Lowers contest.
