  • Flashback Huntington Beach Circa 1986

    HB Riot
The year was 1986 and the US Open was is in full swing. I was three years-old, so I 'm telling this story from the stories of others. OK, so back to the setting, it's the mid 80s in a drinking town with a surfing problem. A few girls decide they want to dance with their tops off at a surf contest, I don't see a problem with that, but the gestapo of H.B. did.

Needless to say, the cops told these ultra-friendly females to put their fun bags away. Then it happened. The Riverside guys, who had been invading Huntington for years (and still are), and not getting much play, starting heckling the cops. Once again they didn't get much play, so when they got to see boobs, no one better tell those boobs to go inside. Fast forward an hour or so, a few cop cars are flipped, and a riot ensued.

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more in Irvine-By-The-Sea. It's a town with a fair share of counter culture individuals, but is run by extremely conservative people. The powers that be in HB, like to keep the streets clean, and the people in line, which creates anxed. Go out to the bars on Main St. any day in the town and you'll see a lot of drunken, pissed off meat heads that like to fight, and a bunch of stoned surfers that like to party. All in a town that votes Republican.

Anyway, what's the reason for this tale? Well, while that was transpiring, a young Christian Hasoi was killing a halfpipe on the beach. And thanks to our friends over at Action Archives we have the footage, check it out.
