The first surfer from NJ to qualify for the WCT, Dean is also a survivor of cancer. Dean was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease in 2001. Dean surfs for the San Diego Sea Lions in the NSL, but for team East Coast in the X Games. In 2004 Dean was awarded the MVP of the East Coast team as they held on to their X Games title for a second consecutive year.

Dean qualified for the WCT in 1996 becoming the first surfer from New Jersey to ever claim that achievement. Dean was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease in June 2001, after noticing some abnormal lumps on his neck. Dean's cancer went into remission following chemotherapy treatments in 2002. In 2004, Dean won the Red Bull Ice Break Challenge in Nova Scotia in 32 degree water. Dean also surfs for team San Diego in the NSL. When the California Cup came to his home break of Oceanside California in 2004, Randazzo showed up to one of the games in a limousine.
