  • 2010 Simpel Session

Simpel Session is this weekend. February 6-7. It is their 10th anniversary and it is needless to say that they have come a long way. Watching their retrospective videos of the first Simpel Sessions is hilarious. Just dudes hucking airs over one jump in front of less than 20 people. It's awesome.

The gnarliest dudes of Skate and BMX will be there, yes that means Ryan Sheckler and Garrett Reynolds, and the full list of riders can be seen HERE.

You can watch the event live on freecaster this weekend. Hit up the Simpel website for that link. Well, for any more information hit up the Simpel website pretty much. www.SESSION.eesimpel session facebooksimpel session twitter

Here's the course overview for this year... My favorite obstacle? I'm a street dog so I dig the rails and hubba ledges buuut... I wanna see somebody grind that red rail from the VANS box jump to the end. Wonder if it will be like that.

  • BMX in 2009

2010 is soon approaching so it's time to take a rather vague look back at the year we will be saying goodbye to in a few days. BMX may be growing increasingly since the action sports takeover of the world so let's see what progression went down in Oh Nine.

The BMX community has been blessed to see Mike Aitken back on a bike in 2009 after his near fatal crash a year prior. He progressed quickly and was back on dirt jumps and handrails, with a helmet, in no time. He also won the NORA CUP for dirt. Stephen Murray donated $10,000 to stem cell research which we hope will someday lead to technology enabling people like Stephen to walk again.

Jamie Bestwick SWEPT... absolutely SWEPT the 2009 Dew Tour in vert and did it all about 5 feet higher than everyone.

This year's NORA CUP event going down during Interbike was dominated by Nike 6.0 with their film "Writing on the Wall". What more can we say about Garrett Reynolds this year? NORA video part of the year, Dew Tour Park Champion, X Games gold medalist... He's just a kid!

Another great contest that went down near the year's end was the King of the Animal House event put on by Dave Mirra and his many sponsors. Sixteen of the world's best riders gathered in the wild warehouse and ran a muck. Whips here, barspins there, flips - back and front. It was inexplicable and Dennis Enarson walked (drove?) away with a brand new Subaru WRX after that weekend.

Newest addition to the Dew Tour this year is the Nike 6.0 event in Huntington Beach right on the sand where girls in bikinis make dudes on bikes seem less exciting to watch... Like seriously...

One of the bigger moves in the industry was the disbanding of the Fit
team and the new company CVLT started by former Stay Fitter Robbie
Morales who brought along Dakota Roche, Chase Hawk (who won NORA CUP ramp rider), and Chase Dehart to
CVLT. The older Fit riders Stayed Fit like Van Homan, Brian Foster,
Mike Aitken, Eddie Cleveland, and Edwin Delarosa. I'm not sure exactly
why the separation occurred but it was quite clear Robbie had other
    ideas for a company.

Rich Hirsch stepped down from Subrosa to start his own bike company,
Stranger, which will release products early 2010. The first Stranger
video consisted of Caleb doing a ridiculous nose manual, as usual, but
does this mean Caleb is going anywhere? No word yet...

Nate Moroshan starts Cardinal Bikes with the unique vertical dropout feature on their first frame. Riders Manuel Cantero and Anthony Flores are first to put the unique feature to the test.

FBM starts a big custom frame program that seems to be growing in popularity and for good reason. For $450, get the frame you have always wanted detail by detail, tube ODs and geometry all to your personal preference.

Both Stolen and Fit Bike Co released part kits which are like Insta-Bike, Just Add Frame to make bike building a bit easier and less expensive. It seriously is not a bad option if you want to build a bike quick and cheap. The parts in the kit are essentially parts from their high end complete bikes. Simple concept.

Subrosa made a grip of team changes, including the Rich Hirsch deal, by putting Hoang Tran and Kyle Hart on pro and building a Skeleton Crew consisting of great riders from all over the world. To close the year off they also added Miles Rogoish to the pro team and I think will be releasing a film with Miles' film making capabilities. They also released their first color in Subrosa history, red.

Gary Young leaves Macneil and not too surprisingly ends up on Sunday! Bikes. By the way, Sunday! started doing complete bikes this year so look out for those in the future.

Mike Hoder comes back with new sponsor S&M and 360s your whole house... S&M also displays their WTF bike at Interbike which consists of many ridiculous features to lighten up a bike and it's pretty crazy. Not sure if they are releasing any of it really. I know they're not releasing their giant SLAM bars...

There's too many to list, but many shoe companies drop their BMX
programs and all riders with them due to the economic crunch and all.
But if a company is so quick to dump their riders who wants to ride for
them anyway? I know you're probably saying "ummm, I do," but whatever.

Odyssey BMX released new branch of company for flatland products deemed "Flatware".

Harry Main has a bad leg break in the middle of the contest season but came back by the end of the year and ready for the 2010 contest season. Watch out world, I am stoked on this kid like you'd never know!

Allan Cooke steps up into position as "Brand Manager" for sponsor Haro Bikes.

    Daniel Dhers goes brakeless.

Mike Spinner is guest on new late night type talk show whatever... Jimmy Fallon show...

Mike Escamilla and Rick Thorne star in the "hit film" Paul Blart Mall Cop...

Macneil held the best contest ever called "You're a Man Now Son". Casey Stein got to celebrate his 18th birthday drinking (legally) in Eastern Canada with the whole Macneil crew. It's safe to say... that he is a MAN NOW SON!!!

Watch Casey do his first handrail on the Eastern Canada trip with Macneil...

  • What's Up Wednesday?

Yes, Weezer's new album cover (the back) consists of all the band members on Sunday/Odyssey bicycles. Yes, DJ Greyboy had a part in this situation. Yes, we are all stoked. Peep pic below...

Vans and Empire BMX came together, I would suppose through Chase Hawk you know, and did a shoe that I really like. Not only is it good looking and designed well, but it's at a fair price mark of $55. Check it out HERE.

If there is one thing that is never good enough for me on a bicycle, it's the chain. I have been in an on-going fight with the chain for years. I'm going to try the Shadow Interlock but if that doesn't work... NEXT UP! S&M's new chain...

If you need to see Stay Fit now, you better live in New Jersey, New York, Utah, or Oregon. On November 7th, a premiere will go down in each state featuring different team riders to attend. Get more info at fitbikeco.com

HOWEVER, if you live in California and are bummed you can't see STAY FIT Saturday. You can just go to a NORCAL RACE & DIRT CONTEST or a SOCAL KING OF DIRT CONTEST. Click to view more info...

Sunday Bikes put their completes line up on the interwebz, this is cool so check it out HERE.

Let me start off by saying I love this song. GOD! It's so perfect to edit to... AND, Tom Silins is an amazing rider to watch so everything came together in this web edit. Hopefully you're not at school or work because this one is going to make you want to go out and ride...

Mutiny riders Matt Roe and Robbo ride an old mini ramp in a field. Looks so fun.

  • The Year 2009 with Garrett Reynolds

What can you say? What can you say about a teenager who took the BMX world by storm and never sold out, never changed who he was, never tried to ride like anyone else, or even wanted to win really really bad. They say if you find a job you love you will never have to work again. I think Garrett Reynolds, out of his love for BMX, will never have to compete again. Sounds weird... you get the idea.

This year Garrett ran a rampage on the park contest of Dew Tour. He also destroyed any X Games street event in his way. Top all of that off with his MTV television show with Dennis Enarson and winning TWO Nora Cups, best video part and best street rider... I'm pretty speechless right now.

So, at the Orlando Dew Cup event this weekend. Garrett was officially crowned 2009 Dew Tour Park Champion. "Feel like I got on a championship ring!" He got more than a ring man... check his watch and his epic cup at the end of the video.

So congratulations to Garrett Reynolds for not only winning all these contests and awards and this and that, but doing all of it with a smile on his face, beanie instead of a helmet, no stickers posted all over his gear, always wearing a flannel or something. Congrats to Garrett for keeping it real and being the most achieved BMX rider today at the same time!

    Take THAT Kanye West...
