Danny Kass, the snowboard pro known for his insane snowboard skills and off-the-wall personality, joined legendary Swiss film company Absinthe to film for their highly anticipated 2012 release, "Resonance." In this episode of "Flipside," the web series that delves into the making of the film, Kass and crew travel to pro snowboarder Gigi Ruf's hometown of Arlberg, Austria. The powder was plentiful, which created perfect conditions for the pros to go big on a man-made jump deep in the Austrian backcountry. See Kass in action in this entertaining episode of "Flipside."
The never-ending stream of snowboard teasers is still flowing, and this week we were bombarded by Nike, Roxy, and Quiksilver with their very different releases of trailers that collectively had us shaking in our boots. If these edits don't motivate you to go pull on your outerwear and run around the house, we don't know what will.
"Nike Snowboarding Project," Nike Snow: Nike has upped the ante as usual with their 2012 "Nike Snowboarding Project," which will include three different chapters of edits, with each chapter worked on by different filmmakers and featuring different heavy-hitting snowboarders. Filmmakers Joe Carlino (Nike Action), Brad Kremer (Burton and Mack Dawg), and Justin Hostynek (Absinthe Films) worked on the first chapter, which is being released Oct. 16. The teaser below is a little preview to all three perspectives and provides a glimpse of what each filmmaker was working with. They've covered all their bases with riders slaying the backcountry, taking over terrain parks, and charging the streets. All together the project features riders Johnnie Paxson, Jess Kimura, Halldor Helgason, Justin Bennee, Jed Anderson, Sage Kotsenburg, Louie Vito, Gjermund Braaten, Jamie Nicholls, Danny Kass, Ethan Morgan, Jan Scherrer, Peetu Piiroinen, Austin Smith, Gigi Ruf, Nicolas Muller, Danny Kass, and Eric Jackson. A little bit of a mouthful, wouldn't you say?
"Wanderlust," Roxy Snowboarding/Peepshow Films: Roxy and Peepshow have joined lady forces and created one hell of a chick flick. The handful of rippers in "Wanderlust" provides us with so many dynamic and different riding skills that when smashed together, it creates a ridiculous and amazing ball of shredding. Peepshow is known for technical and stylish urban riding while Roxy's team gets us in the halfpipe, park, and big mountain riding. "Wanderlust" looks to highlight all sides of women's snowboarding as well as offer a simple vibe of fun and camaraderie. It features riders Torah Bright, Erin Comstock, Robin Van Gyn, Corinne Pasela, Joanie Robichaud, Danyale Patterson, Ty Walker, and Kjersti Buaas.
"Quiksilver Team Montage," Quiksilver Snowboarding: Although this isn't technically a teaser, per say, it still got us as giddy as a 15-year-old girl ogling Justin Bieber. Riders Bryan Fox, Will Lavigne, Travis Rice, Danimals, Johnny Brady, Ted Borland, Alex Beebe, Matt Belzile, and Jake Olson-Elm get together in this team montage, get after it, and paint a perfect snowboarding picture with their different styles and abilities. Urban, big mountain, parks--you name it, and they've got it.
Look what we stumbled upon: more snowboard teasers that will get you itching to ride. This may be because the closer we get to cooler temperatures and fall, the more companies release their snowboard trailers stocked with hammers from the 2011-12 season. This week Bluebird Wax, Absinthe Films, and Torstein Horgmo caught our inner shredder's attention.
"Horgasm: A Love Story" from Torstein Horgmo: "All I do is try to have as much fun as I can...it's been working out pretty good so far, I think." This statement from Torstein Horgmo describes his two-year project in a nutshell. "Horgasm: A Love Story" follows this mega-pro throughout his chaotic and adventurous career snowboarding and getting into whatever trouble he can find. This guy can pretty much land anything he sets his mind to--at least it appears that way to the general public. Known for his sense of humor and his seriously stylish riding, this film looks to be stocked with the bad-ass snowboarding and entertaining antics that we've come to expect from Torstein.
"Resonance" from Absinthe Films: With a history of making snowboard films that resonate long after they are released, including "Twel2ve," "NowHere," and "Neverland." Absinthe Films' latest venture, "Resonance," is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. The list of talent is overwhelming, including Nicolas Muller, Gigi Ruf, Wolle Nyvelt, and Bode Merrill being joined by Absinthe newcomers Eric Jackson, Brandon Cocard, Manuel Diaz, Danny Kass, and Scotty Lago. "Resonance" brings forth the identifiable Absinthe vibe of hefty big-mountain riding, deep powder turns, and determination to demonstrate what snowboarding means to them.
"Alpenhoff," full movie from Bluebird Wax: Last season Willie McMillon tricked a group of heavy hitters to head to Switzerland in the midst of one of the most epic winters the American West had ever seen. They left the deep and steep to head to one of the worst seasons the Swiss had ever seen. Kurt Wastell, Nate Deschennes, Adam Dowell, Chad Otterstrom, Nicolas Muller, Freddie K, and Silvano Z dove into this project not knowing what to expect--and just looking for an adventure in the Alps. This is the full movie that documents what these guys got into abroad--and the lines and hits they ended up scoring. And yes, this film has David Hasselhoff is in it.
Wow. Every week our minds are blown over and over again with these Internviews. Snowboarder Magazine's intern Jade "Jelly" Mclain is an interviewer powerhouse. Powerhouse meaning she's already interviewed a handful of legendary pros that many will never get the chance to even sit next to. On top of that, she asks the most ridiculous questions and makes the pro's somewhat uncomfortable. It's great.
Many don't appreciate what's going on here. Probably because the interviews make them uncomfortable as well however, Jade is asking the questions no one bothers to ask and is finding out the small details that really matter. Stuff that has to do with colors and Bank of Americas in Austria.
She's genuine, quirky, and has a style that we've never seen before. So stop judging and listen to what Gigi Ruf has to say to Snowboarder's Jade Mclain this week.
