Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, won his fourth AMA Supercross Lites class victory in five races of the Western Regional Championship. As the gates dropped on the premier AMA Supercross class main event, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Nick Wey, of Murrieta, Calif., grabbed the SPIKE Holeshot Award, followed by Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, and Valli Motorsports Yamaha's Ivan Tedesco, of Murrieta, Calif. In the first corner, points leader and Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., lost his rear wheel and fell, collecting several other riders. After remounting mid-pack, Dungey fell again heading to the finish-line double and dropped to the tail end of the field. At the front, Millsaps made his move for the lead on lap three and never looked back. San Manuel Yamaha's Josh Hill, of Carlsbad, Calif., finished second while Tedesco brought home third. "Yeah it was a good night for me," said Millsaps. "I came out on top. American Honda is the best crew in world. The tack was slick. You had to just be smooth, consistent and make no mistakes and that's what I did. It was such an amazing race and I can't explain how good it feels." As the AMA Supercross Lites class blasted out of the gates, GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., grabbed the SPIKE Holeshot Award with Weimer and teammate Blake Wharton, of Pilot Point, Texas, in second and third, respectively. Canard found trouble and went down on the first lap, allowing Weimer to get by and lead the rest of the way, inching closer to the Western Regional title. "Yeah it was a good night," said Weimer. "I was able to get a good start right behind Trey (Canard) and unfortunately he went down. I was able to get by and I just tried to be consistent from there. The track was definitely tricky but it held up well." Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda's Cole Seely, of Newbury Park, Calif., earned his best-career finish in second while teammate Wil Hahn, of Decatur, Texas, finished third. Dungey currently holds a four-point advantage over Hill in the AMA Supercross standings while Weimer leads Canard by 26 points. AMA Supercross Class Results: San Diego 1. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, won his third consecutive Western regional AMA Supercross Lites class race, leading all 15 laps of the main event. Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Austin Stroupe, of Lincolnton, N.C., won the $1,500 Spike Holeshot Award with San Manuel/Yamaha's James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., on his back wheel through turn one. Stewart moved into the lead, passing Stroupe on the opening lap. Stewart's San Manuel/Yamaha teammate Josh Hill, of Yoncalla, Ore., then passed Stroupe for second. Dungey started in seventh and starting working his way through the pack, and by the end of lap two he was in fourth place. At the end of lap six, Hill passed Stewart for the lead, and on lap 11, Dungey passed Stewart for second. Patiently waiting in second place, Dungey shot past Hill on lap 14 for the lead. Dungey held on for the win and extended his points lead to 15 over Hill. Hill finished second and Stewart finished third. "On lap 12, I started to get tired and had to settle for second," said Hill. "That was a great race up at the front of the pack, and I was enjoying the competition. The goal is to keep getting better each week." "It was a fun race, and we all raced clean," said Dungey. "I was able to see what lines were working out there, so I learned through the race. I tried to be patient out there tonight. Racing 20 laps is a long time, so you have to be smart." "Ryan and Josh were riding awesome tonight, and I am happy to come out of here with a decent finish," said Stewart. "I try my best, and that is all I can do. I always give it 100%." Weimer didn't take long to establish the lead as he moved passed his teammate Josh Hansen, who won the Spike Holeshot Award, after turn two. Hansen, of Elbert, Colo., was passed on lap three by Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda's Wil Hahn, of Decatur, Texas. Late in the race GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard passed Hansen late in the race to secure third place. Hahn held on for second place, which was his best finish of the 2010 season. Weimer now leads the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class points race with a 19-point lead over Canard. "So far, so good for me," said Weimer. "I wanted to come out here and win, and that is what I have earned. I am really excited about this. This is a huge step in the right direction." Gautier Paulin, France, Yamaha, 30 Channels: Moto Race Report: Phoenix - Monster Energy Supercross![]() After an epic premier one week ago, round two of the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season didn't disappoint as Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., won his first career AMA Supercross class victory en route to taking the points lead. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, captured his second straight AMA Supercross Lites Western Regional victory. The night began dramatically when points leader James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., was involved in a frightening crash during his heat race. The San Manuel Yamaha rider overcame obvious pain to compete in the last chance qualifier where he took the win and qualified for the main event. As the gates dropped, Dungey raced to his second straight SPIKE Holeshot Award, with Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., and teammate Austin Stroupe, of Lincolnton, N.C., following, and never looked back leading all 20 laps of the main event. "I'm just pumped on the nice performance (tonight)," said Dungey. "This is a big step in my career. I owe a lot of thanks to all the people supporting me. I'm glad to get this out of the way and I'll never forget it. It's early in the season and last week was tough. James was on it and I hope he's ok. It's just great to come out with a win here in round two." Stewart found himself buried in the back of the field alongside rival Chad Reed, of Tampa, Fla., and the duo followed one another throughout the early part of the race until Reed attempted to pass the reigning champion on lap five, causing a collision and subsequent fall for both riders. Reed failed to finish for the second week in a row while Stewart soldiered home in 15th. Villopoto rode to a solid runner-up finish while San Manuel Yamaha's Josh Hill, of Yoncalla, Ore., landed in third. As the AMA Supercross Lites class blasted out of the gates, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Josh Hansen, of Elbert, Colo., grabbed the SPIKE Holeshot Award with GEICO Powersports Honda teammates Blake Wharton, of Pilot Point, Texas, and Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., following in second and third, respectively. As the field entered the section before the first triple, Hansen lost control of his bike and suffered a hard crash. Wharton assumed the lead and would hold it until lap 12 when Rockstar Energy Suzuki/Canidae's Ryan Morais, of Murrieta, Calif., made the pass with Weimer close behind. The next lap, Weimer made the pass for the win. "I struggled a bit for some reason," said Weimer. "I got my first win (in Phoenix) and I love it here, but I always struggle in the sand (section) every year. I made some mistakes in the beginning and never thought I'd be up here. This is kind of a surprise but it's great." Morais finished just behind in second while Wharton held on for third. Dungey currently holds a nine-point advantage over Villopoto in the AMA Supercross standings while Weimer leads Morais by eight points in the AMA Supercross Lites Western Regional standings.
