  • Wakeboarding Magazine's Facelift

    Wakeboarding Magazine

The latest issue of Wakeboarding Magazine, the April issue, is out now. This issue is especially newsworthy because our favorite magazine, just got a makeover. I have seen the cover and let me tell you, it's like nothing you've seen on the mag before, and I LOVE it. The cover has an updated look with a new logo, a more artistic shot than usual, and a cover shot first for a very special rider.

The new logo looks sick. I remember talking to Mike Witt, the mag's art director, and him creating a more edgy and updated logo. This new logo works perfectly, it's easy to read, simple, modern, and doesn't look as lame as the past logo.

When it comes to magazines, I am a huge fan of Journals (i.e. The Surfer's Journal). When I read a mag I always page through it first and scope out all the photos, then on the second or third time around, I finally read the text. Wakeboading Mag went out on a limb with this month's shot and it worked. The cover shot was lit by car headlights and one, 2400-watt flash. Riders had a difficult time hitting the already-challenging 100-foot flat bar in the dark after emerging from the man-made cloud of industrial smoke. Brian Soderlind (or "Bear" to many) was behind the lens of this cover shot. When Bear is shooting, you can be pretty sure that the photos will be unique, creative, and innovative. Bear explains his cover shot best, ' I thought the fog machine would be a cool way to make wakeboarding look like a rock concert or a Hollywood movie,' says Soderlind. ' We had to stop shooting because the wind was just barely blowing west, and all that fog crept over to the Orlando Speedway, and they had to take everybody off the motocross track and shut down the whole place, there was no visibility at all. It was a good excuse to play with a cool ass fog machine."

Jeff McKee, a local boy, is featured on his first Wakeboarding Mag cover this issue. Jeff is a fitting rider to feature while rolling out a new look for the Mag. Jeff is always pushing the limits as both a freerider and a journalist. The eye catching new look of the magazine matches Jeff's personality perfectly.

I had a chance to talk to Kevco, the editor, about the new look that he's been working on for quite awhile now. He is beyond stoked on the new look, ' It was time for the mag to re-invent itself and now was the perfect time. All our photographers and riders are pushing it harder than ever so we were sitting on a bunch of solid content. Our art director, Mike Witt, has been working on this new logo for six months and this shot was the perfect image to help launch our brand of the future.'

This is big in the history of Wakeboarding Magazine, so make sure you grab the April issue to add to your library. I promise, it will not disapoint.
