    Friday, May 29th, 2009: Karine Ruby, the first women to ever win a gold medal in Alpine Snowboarding at the 1998 Nagano, Japan Olympics, has died in a tragic mountain climbing accident in France.

    According to reports from the AFP (Associated French Press), Ruby and a group of climbers were mountaineering in the Mont Blanc range near Chamonix, France. The five climbers were tethered together when the top climber fell into a crevasse, pulling Ruby..

    Karine Ruby was a French snowboarder and Olympic champion. She won a gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. She received a silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

    Ruby died on 29 May 2009 after a climbing accident on Mont Blanc when the top climber, Gilles Monchard, along with the five other roped climbers, fell into a crevasse pulling Ruby and French climber Simon Ouest to their deaths.
