Jacobellis was first invited to compete in the X Games at the age of 15, and 2010 will mark her 11th year of competing in the prestigious event. Known for being very competitive and loving her sport, Jacobellis has enjoyed seeing the sport grow just as she has and is happy to be a part of it. However, during the gold medal final of the Boardercross event at the 2006 Winter Olympics, Jacobellis was approaching the end of the course with a 43-meter, three-second lead over Tanja Frieden of Switzerland. On her second to last jump, while showboating, Jacobellis attempted a method grab, landed on the edge of her board, and fell. Frieden passed her to win the gold; Jacobellis recovered and settled for silver. In televised interviews, Jacobellis initially claimed the grab was meant to maintain stability, but later admitted that it was not necessary. She said "Snowboarding is fun, I was having fun." A year later at the 2007 Winter X Games, Jacobellis lost the lead in a fall near the finish line. She regained the gold medal in the same event at Winter X Games XII in 2008. This year, Jacobellis is back at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and is ready for that top spot on the podium. Video Coverage |
