  • 3rd Annual Supergirl Pro Junior Event Recap

GrindTV Newswire, Via ASA Entertainment: OCEANSIDE, Calif. (August 14, 2010) -- In true Supergirl style, Coco Ho (Oahu, HI) surfed over the competition in Oceanside, California today to win the 3rd Annual Supergirl Pro Junior. Sixteen of the world's best 20-and-under female surfers took to the waves to battle for the richest purse in ASP Women's Pro Junior history, with Ho claiming the $10,000 top prize and her second Supergirl Pro Junior title. Malia Manuel (Kauai, HI), Lakey Peterson (Santa Barbara, CA) and Leila Hurst (Kauai, HI) captured second, third and fourth place, respectively.

    Official Results--2010 Supergirl Pro Junior

    1. Coco Ho 16.26 points
    2. Malia Manuel 15.17 points
    3. Lakey Peterson 10.67 points
    4. Leila Hurst 10.27 points

Draped in the winner's Supergirl cape, Ho said, "I'm so stoked. Now I have one cape for each arm. The Supergirl [Pro Junior] is the most fun event ever!"

An ASP Grade-4 surfing contest, the Supergirl Pro Junior is the second event in this year's Supergirl Jam, the action sports industry's only large-scale, all-female competition and lifestyle event designed to promote female empowerment, strength and independence. The first event, the Supergirl Am Jam, which honored female amateur skateboarders, occurred on June 30 at Skatelab, in Simi Valley, California.

Ho was the first Supergirl Pro Junior champion, winning the title in 2008 in Huntington Beach, California. She entered today's competition hoping for a second win, but after fighting a cold all week and sizing up her competition, she knew it was going to be a hard fought battle.

"Malia [Manuel] started out the finals so strong, I thought she had it in the bag," said Ho. "I'm so glad I got a few good waves."

Manuel hit the water and didn't waste any time catching some early waves, recording an 8.00 and 7.17 early on to claim the top spot. Her lead held until nearly the mid-point of the 30-minute heat, then Ho hit back-to-back waves of 7.53 and 8.73 - the highest score of the heat - to take the lead. Ho would stay at the top until the end, despite a late charge from Manuel. Needing an 8.27 to take reclaim first place, Manuel grabbed a late wave and rode it to the shore, but was only able to score a solid 6.67. For the second year in a row, she claimed the second place silver medal.

"The girls were really rippin' today," said Manuel. "Thanks to Supergirl for this opportunity. If you invite me back next year, I'm here!"

A first year addition to the competition was the Supergirl Shootout, two 10-minute heats designed for the remaining field to compete in an 'expression session' for a total of $1000. Carissa Moore (Honolulu, HI), the recent 2010 U.S. Open Women's Champion, and Amy Nicholl (Drexel Hill, PA) each won $500, recording the highest scoring wave in the special events.

The next stop for the Supergirl Jam event series will be Venice Beach, California, on August 22. This event will feature the Snowboard Rail Jam, Skateboard Street and Inline Best Trick competitions starting at 12:30 p.m. All the action will be webcast on a host of major web sites including FoxSports.com, GrindTV.com, Supergirl.com and Supergirljam.com, the official online destination for the 2010 Supergirl Jam.

The entire Supergirl Jam event series will be broadcast nationally in November as part of event producer ASA Entertainment's action sports block on Fox Sports Net and FUEL TV.

  • Courtney Conlogue proves to be the top surf Supergirl

So, I obviously got super stoked on the 3rd Annual Supergirl Jam because of the fact that they are bringing snow to Venice Beach September 6th; however, I just realized that maybe some people want to hear about the results of the surf portion, the Supergirl Pro Junior (ASP Grade 4). Courtney Conlogue, the 2009 Hurley US Open of Surfing champ took home the win down in Oceanside, CA this past weekend, followed closely by Malia Manuel. Here are the results and a link to read more about it - I am definitely not the person to be reporting about surfing, I'll let the experts handle it.

Supergirl Pro Junior Day 2 Results - ASP Grade-4 Pro Junior
    1 - Courtney Conlogue (USA) 12.90
    2 - Malia Manuel (HAW) 12.40
    3 - Sage Erickson (USA) 8.15
    4 - Nikita Robb (ZAF) 6.45

  • What's With All the Hot Young Chicks?

It used to be the women's surfing at the U.S. Open was nothing more than an extended bathroom break. Save for a small handful of women who actually had some decent timing and a little bit of rhythm it was unbelievably painful to watch. Now, I may be dating myself a little bit here, because the girls have certainly turned things around of late, but during the whole Blue Crush movement there wasn't much to sink your teeth into. Yeah, they came in greater numbers but that didn't improve things much in the performance arena...until recently.

14-year old Malia Manuel taking it to the big girls in the 2008 U.S. Open of Surfing. Now 15, she's the youngest defending champion ever, and a threat in both the Nike 6.0 Pro Junior and the Women's Open.

I became a believer in the whole women's thing about two years ago. Not the viability of the sport, mind you, but a believer in their improved board-riding skills. While that's late by most standards but I've come around pretty big. Two years ago I made a bet with guys in the office at SURFER Magazine that a female surfer would qualify for the ASP's World Tour inside of ten years. I was nearly laughed out of the building by Jason Kenworthy, one of SURFER's lead photographers, but I made that wager after having sat through a couple WCT events and having watched Carissa Moore, who at the time, was about 13 or 14-years old. Speaking strictly in terms of style, I picked about 10 guys on the ASP World Tour who I thought were complete eye sores next to Carissa. Granted, they might be putting their boards in more radical places and with more power and speed, but from what I could tell, it was only a matter of time until Carissa, or somebody like her, matured enough to supply the missing ingredients. At the time I remember thinking Carissa was the only really hot young female talent around. Malia Manuel proved me very wrong last year.

Coco Ho will be giving her friend Malia a good run this week. Photo: Jimmycane from Dear and Yonder.

At 14-years-old, Malia became the youngest person to ever win an ASP event at the U.S. Open of Surfing. Malia's surfing is elegant yet aggressive. She draws mature lines and uses her edges with precision well beyond her years. But what's even more impressive? She's not alone. In fact, there's a pretty solid crop of young girls looking to completely change the face of surfing on the women's side of the sport. Where as on the men's side there are only two surfers in the entire Top 10 who're under 25 years old, on the women's side of things it's the exact opposite. A New School movement is just hitting. And you needn't look much further than the finals of this year's Nike 6.0 women's Pro Junior to understand what I'm talking about.

Manuel and fellow Hawaiian Coco Ho have already surfed their way into the Pro Junior Final on Saturday, where they'll be joining Sage Erickson of Ventura and Cannelle Bulard of Reunion Island. For what it's worth, both Erickson and Bulard defeated Carissa Moore in the Semifinals. Moore will be out for revenge in the Open while protecting her WQS ratings lead over Coco Ho. This is probably where I should tell you that Jason Kenworthy, who doubles as a team manager for Nike 6.0, was instrumental in nabbing Moore from Roxy. In the two years since we made our bet he's come a long way on the women's thing, too. I knew he was turning the corner when he asked me a couple months ago, "Dude, what's with all these hot chicks?"

The Women's division of the U.S. Open starts Wednesday. My suggestion if you're down there, hit the head early.

  • A Chick Flick Worth Seeing...Again

    Dear and Yonder
Editors Note: Dear & Yonder directors Tiffany Campbell and Andrea Lessler were awarded the Breakthrough Filmmaker of the Year Award at this year's Surfer Poll gala last week. We hope that very worthy honor will convince you to go check this film out. When you do I think you'll fall pretty hard for Lizzy Clark, one of today's most hardcore adventurist. In fact, you can read a lot more about Clark in the current issue of Surfer Magazine. We'll take this moment to congratulate Campbell and Lessler on a job well done. The text below is my reaction to the film after a screening in July. -- PG

When I was a grom, I had wonderful dreams about Paradise Island, which is not be confused with Fantasy Island, y'know, where Ricardo Montalban (RIP) and that little Tatoo guy (RIP) who used to always be searching for planes circling overhead. Anyway, Paradise Island is where Wonder Woman comes from. And well, as far as I was concerned back then, she was the hottest chick alive. Paradise Island is inhabited and ruled entirely by women. Incredible Amazon warrior women who were smart, beautiful, athletic, and yeah, really frickin' sexy. It was a lot for a 14-year old kid to handle. Go ahead, see for yourself.

Thing is, I'm pretty sure Paradise Island actually exist out there somewhere, and not just in the form of some Vegas strip club. When I saw a preview of the new chick flick, Dear and Yonder, which stars some of the hottest female surfers in the world, including Sofia Mulanovich, Stephanie Gilmore, Coco Ho, Kassia Meadore, Malia Manuel and the queen of wanderlust, Lizzy Clark, my faith in that belief was restored.

That this movie even exists is a bit of a dream come true for that kid in me. Packs of talented girls having fun together in bikinis while demonstrating their talent in perfect surf? Really, what's not to love? Yes, the whole thing is eye-candy, it's beautifully shot by Thomas and Tiffany Campbell, Sonny Miller, Dave Homcy and Scott Soens, and then put together nicely by Tiffany and Andria Lessler, utilizing some compelling hooks, from odes to the pioneers of women's surfing to modern day world champs, groovy artists, and exotic adventurist like Elizabeth "Lizzy" Clark, who has been sailing across the Pacific for the past couple of years in her 40' boat searching for waves. She will flat-out steal your heart in this film, and you'll wish you could jump on board with her.

Granted, it's a chick flick, but any theater showing this film stands a good chance of becoming its own little Paradise Island. And these aren't your average girls. These are Wonder Women. Do what you have to to get there.
