Lites Main start, and the Weimer/Hansen duo charge to the first turn in the lead. Hansen’s a great starter (as is Weimer), but as far as holding his spot up front, well, not so much. Another notable here is Broc Tickle (#20), who ended up going down early and was never a factor. Bummer luck for Tickle but hey, like Ricky Carmichael says - you make your own luck! Tough crowd here.
Trey, Trey, Trey. Deemed by Ricky Carmichael to be the favorite for the Lites West title, Geico’s Trey Canard just seems to shun success in his career. He’s obviously one of the fastest and most exciting riders to watch on the track, but that little *something* that makes a winner is simply not showing itself. He hurt his left foot or ankle on the first lap of his heat, which forced him into the LCQ, clearly ailing a bit from the pain. That makes two front runners in the Lites west (Weimer too) who may now be less than 100% heading into Anaheim 2 this weekend. Canard eventually ended up 7th in the main event and isn’t a likely candidate for that Lites West championship that Carmichael predicted.
It was 2005 when RC and Bubba had what I feel is the greatest race they’d ever run. They were back and forth all moto, and RC actually passed James at this very moment, on the same jump that Bubba eventually ate crap hard enough on that he’s still intimidated by it. I was setup to pan with them elsewhere on the track, but I was the pass coming so I winged it and hoped for the best and whaddaya know, it worked. Canon 1D Mark 2, 300mm. (Jeff Kardas Photo)
Ricky Carmichael, Millville, I believe 2007. This may very well be my favorite straight-up ‘typical’ action shot of all time. He looks intense, he is intense, he’s going fast, and he’s running away. In fact, I think he was about 30 secs ahead of 2nd place at this point, but you’d never know it by looking at this. Camera: Canon 1Ds Mark 2, 300mm. (Jeff Kardas Photo)
2003 Pontiac Supercross, I believe, and it’s RC vs. Lusk and a whole lot of action going on. I love this mainly because it’s busy, colorful and RC is pinned. He used to contort his entire body to twist the throttle open when sprinting off the line, and it was just so cool to watch and snag a moment of. RC is the man. Canon 1D, 70-200mm. I love when they do the fireworks behind the start at Daytona, but it’s surprisingly hard to capture. In fact, ever since this shot, I’ve never been able to do it again. 2006. Canon 1D Mark 2, 300mm. (Jeff Kardas Photo)
You know that big “pro” double that’s at Steel City? Do you remember when it was really big and sort of odd? Well, this is from then, and I believe this was 2002 or 2003, and the rain had been threatening all day. RC was smoking everyone, the wind was gusting, and I think part of what he’s doing here is trying to correct for that. Oh, and the sun just happened to come out at this very moment and light him up. That’s dumb luck. Nikon D1, 70-200mm. (Jeff Kardas Photo)
You’ll notice one thing in a lot of these action pics – they’re typically of really fast guys trying very hard to go very fast. In other words, there’s a lot of shots of RC and Bubba here. This one right here, this is the one that started it all for me. I somehow managed to scrounge up a photo pass for the 2002 Red Bud National and was using a Nikon D1 that I bought (very) used from Steve Bruhn to snag this moment in time. Shawn Norfolk, then with Renthal, bought it from me and it ran on the back cover of RacerX. If I had died right then, I’d have died a happy man. Thanks Shawn! Nikon D1, not sure about the lens. I’m including this only because it ended up as a very cool Renthal ad that I couldn’t find the comp of. It’s RC on the 2-stroke, feet on the pegs, layed over in the Red Bud first turn loam trying to outrun Kdub on his 450. Even cooler is the fact that Yogi’s inside of RC, looking for a way around him. 2003, Canon 1D, 70-200mm. (Jeff Kardas Photo)
