A2 was truly an impressive display by Dungey. After he pulled a convincing heat race win over Ryan Villopoto, he then stalked both Josh Hill and James Stewart in the main event before pouncing and dropping them both like last week’s garbage. Now it must be said that James was clearly ailing more than just a little bit, but he was certainly charging hard as he put up fights against both Hill and Dungey. Regardless, the way in which Dungey was able to get by and forget about the both of them was just plain impressive and that’s not even mentioning all of the other fast guys he didn’t even have to deal with because he was so much faster than them.
A future rivalry in the making, Jake Weimer and Ryan Villopoto discuss bike setup with THOR’s Victor Sheldon following practice. Weimer seems to be the undisputed cream of the crop this season in the Lites West class, which is a good thing since he’ll have to move up to the big boys next season. When he does, RV will be there waiting for him so any friendships that are forming now may be tested on a regular basis. Phoenix was probably the turning point for Villopoto, where he will start truly pushing for the win every time he hits the track for the rest of the season. Despite fearing he’d broken his wrist earlier in the week, Ryan #2 pushed the leader’s pace (Ryan #5) for over half of the main before finally making just a couple of small mistakes that allowed a gap to form. For Weimer, he too was riding somewhat injured in his races after he’d tweaked his foot pretty good early in the practice sessions during the day. He did seem a bit patient as he worked up from a bad start, but after following Wharton and Morais around for much of the main, he finally made his move and went in for the win. Jake’s possibly going to have his foot looked at this week, so stay tuned to whether or not he’ll be near 100% for this weekend (apparently he doesn’t really need to be).
We spotted this butt patch on Villopoto on the pants he wore in the main event. Referencing an old Jay-Z tune “99 problems” (Play song from iLike.com), RV was likely putting to rest a lot of mumbling in the pits lately that his girlfriend may have a bit too tight of hold on him which could be affecting his attitude/results/etc. more than she should be. Of course we aren’t here to judge Ryan on his relationships, but here’s to hoping he continues to improve over the next few weeks so he can keep pushing Dungey’s pace for the entire 20 laps.
It was a little surreal to watch Villopoto and Stroupe battle it out on big 450’s in supercross after having followed them through their entire amateur and pro careers. Both wunderkids on the Team Green program, they both entered the pro ranks under the tutelage of Mitch Payton at Pro Circuit. One flourished, the other did not, and here they are together, floating through the air. Stroupe put up a good battle, but eventually succumbed to Villopoto, who was hell bent on winning his heat race.
This is Glen Helen, 2007 I think, maybe 2006, but the year that they had the truly ridiculous and massive uphill triple/step-up thing that only those with the largest cajones were willing to hit. RV’s testicles are much larger than most, and infinitely harder, and even he had to stretch it out to clear it. I love watching this kid ride – even in this situation he’s got the balls of his feet on the pegs! Even his feet have balls! (Jeff Kardas Photo)
