My SportsSurfing | ![]() AboutTimmy Turner is certifiably insane. No, he's not wearing a straight jacket in a padded room at a mental hospital - he's in the deepest, darkest corners of Indo - the TV show "Survivor's" got nothing on this guy. Every spring like clock work Timmy and his crew go scary-feral - camping in the tiger-filled jungle, praying that the mosquito bites covering their bodies don't turn into Malaria, sacrificing chickens and goats to stave off starvation, paddling out to beg local fisherman for fresh water and riding the longest, hollowest, shallowest tubes in the world. Timmy Turner is a classic throwback to the adventurous souls of surfing's past. The Huntington native is the response to anyone who says that there aren't any hardcore surfers left in So-Cal. His Java journals provided the basis for the best article to appear in Surfer in twenty years and his brilliant film "Second Thoughts" won the coveted Video of the Year prize at the Surfer Poll Awards in 2004. He's also got a heart as evidenced by his dedication to helping victims of the Asian tsunami. His movie The Tsunami Diaries and his first hand account of the aftermath of the disaster on the Quiksilver Foundation website, is both heartbreaking and life affirming. He's also not your typical surf star. He's got a wife and daughter, wears thick glasses and works as a busboy at his family's restaurant, The Sugar Shack. His casual surfer-speak is utterly hilarious to listen to and he's always a favorite guy to take on a surf trip. In 2006, he suffered a horrific bout with staph infection that left him in a coma and nearly ended his life. Thankfully Timmy made a miraculous recovery and is now back in the water. Sponsors |
