| First Ever Switch 1800 in Competition Doesn't Land Torin Yater-Wallace on the Podium?Sorry Torin Yater-Wallace, guess you should have changed your last name to Wallisch. Under bluebird skies, Torin Wallace made history, stomping the first ever switch 1800 in a contest, at the US Grand Prix in Mammoth. Yet Wallace didn't manage to place in slopestyle. That's right. An 1800 and no medal. Still, it's an amazing feat for anyone-- let alone at the ripe age of 16.Guess who did land on the podium? Tom Wallisch. To be fair, we all know Wallisch has natural talent and incomparable style. However, Torin is a known halfpipe skier and the youngest Winter X medalist. And after he laid down a switch 1800 in slopestyle on Sunday, March 5, he deserves credit. Wallisch's winning run was stocked with a switch right side 900, two double cork 1260's, and a pair of proper double corked rodeo 1080's. That may have deserved the 96.40 score that he received. But it doesn't make sense that Wallace ended up buried in fourth behind Alex Bellemare and Joss Christensen in second and third. Moral of the story? Way to go Tom but keep your eyes peeled, Torin is coming in hot behind you. Photo: John Lemieux Channels: Snow GoPro HD: Champions of Winter X Games 16GoPro has been secretly gathering the snow world's b est athletes and creating one hell of an A-team. During Winter X Games 16 that concluded on Sunday January 29, the latest addition to the team was announced. Who might this lone stranger be? Picture flowing fiery locks, questionable taste in snow pants, and an annoying tendency to win every single halfpipe contest he competes in without a second look. Yep. Shaun White. Along with Tom Wallisch, Jamie Anderson, and Hannah Teter, White took home some X Games hardware in 2012. This hardware of course, being the gold medal paired with a perfect score after his last run in men's pipe finals. Tom Wallisch also claimed the gold in men's ski slopestyle as well as Jamie Anderson who earned hers in women's slopestyle finals. Teter followed up with the bronze in women's halfpipe finals. Following back-to-back wars in Men's Ski Slopestyle Elimination and Women's Ski Slopestyle Finals earlier in the day, Men's Ski Slopestyle Finals were set to go down at night for the first time ever. But before finals got underway, the most emotional moment in X Games history took place, via a beautiful tribute to the late Sarah Burke. With a capacity crowd gathered at the base holding glow sticks as makeshift candles, the lights in the pipe were turned off, and virtually every ski competitor here at X Games, along with a strong showing of snowboarders and ski industry types, slowly walked and skied down the pipe with glow sticks in hand as Rory Bushfield and Sarah's parents and family awaited to greet them at the base. Much respect to ESPN for putting together such an amazing, beautiful and healing moment for all of us who loved Sarah so much. Immediately after the tribute, it was go time on the slopestyle course, and in the end, Tom Wallisch picked up his first Winter X Games gold medal to complement his European X Games one with the highest score in skiing slopestyle history at X Games. Tom was on point all night, sitting just behind Nick Goepper on the leader board until his third and final run, when he once again picked up the win at the 11th hour (which is beginning to become a common theme for Tom) with a 450 off the top of the wall ride, to switch 270 on 450 off the close-out rail, to switch right cork 9, left double cork 12 mute, switch right double 10, and switch left double 10.
