In more recent years, DK may have acquired a reputation as sell-outs or as a not "core" BMX brand. Their freestyle department dropped off and their bike quality took a dive but all that has changed. They have sort of reinvented themselves with quality products, one of the best teams in BMX, and now this. An ode to the independent bicycle distributor and BMX shop owner. DK will be limiting their inventory to online mail order websites (not clear as to which ones and to what extent) to help the "little guys" who keep the local scenes alive. Here is a press release from the company to further explain their "grassroots movement":
DK has been in the BMX bicycle business since 1979 trying to provide the best quality BMX parts and bicycles at affordable prices. We have seen many ups and downs in the industry over the past 31 years and have adapted and changed accordingly.
Today's BMX market has changed tremendously over the past several years and consumers have more options than ever before, forcing us to rethink about the industry as a whole and our place within it.
It is no secret that a few mail order companies have captured a large percentage of the BMX market and this has put a strain on our relationship with our independent bicycle dealers (IBD). In an effort to protect the DK brand and to continue to build our relationships with the bicycle dealers, we are making some drastic changes.
Effective immediately, DK will limit all mail order and online shops in order to continue to offer the best BMX products and to put the control back in the hands of the IBD. As a result, these few large mail order companies will no longer be carrying the DK brand.
Along with our renewed efforts to strengthen our relationships with the IBD and consumer, DK will also keep a strong internet presence through our website dkbicycles.com.
We look forward to continuing to offer the best BMX products and strengthening our relationships with those dealers that support BMX.
