Wardo and Nine Irons Requalify

By: Tom Morin

Wardo and Bruce getting loose

The ASP is going to have to put up with another year of Chris Ward and Bruce Irons, both requalified at this year?s Billabong Pipeline Masters. The two had been hot and cold all year and were never able to really find their rhythm.

As you would expect, neither played it safe by doing WQS events, and it all came down to surfing?s ultimate proving ground, Pipeline. They had a man-on-man heat against each other that many thought would save one and give the other the boot.

In the worst conditions for the Pipe Masters ever, it was so small, that they were actually allowed to surf Off the Wall and Ehukai sandbar.Wardo went on to win, beat Slater, and eventually loose to Pancho Sullivan giving him a fifth place finish in the event and a 17th for the year.

Irons, who?s WCT future looked bleak after the loss, actually just made it.The ASP should be thankful, it needs these guys. They are two of the most progressive surfers on tour, they never surf safe in heats, and they always go for it.Maybe, if the tour actually gets waves next year the two will actually try.
