On my way back from the Oakley house I ran into another surfer who has been having a good deal of success lately in a neon jersey, Santa Cruz's Nat Young.
Nat is coming off of two big wins: The O'Neill Cold Water Classic, and the Opens Men's title at the NSSA Nationals. Both of these events he came out of left field, I had to put in a baseball reference the kid's full name is Nat Cy Young. Not so much Nationals, but certainly The Cold Water, where he became the youngest event winner in the contest's history, and he did it on his backhand.
Sit back, relax, and experience a MORINformed interview with Nat Young:
So you've had a pretty good year?
Yeah, it's been a good year for me, I'm stoked. It was good to finish it off with the Coldwater, and now I'm just out here surfing good waves.
How long you here for?
Only six more days, but I've been here for like a month.
Where you off to?
Home, and then Australia for World's.
So you're done with school, and know your just going to try to make the CT'
Yeah, doing Juniors and just working my way up. You know, doing some QS' events, and then maybe in the next couple of years do all of them and try to make a run for it.
How has your season been here so far? Get any good ones?
Yeah, it has been fun. At the beginning I didn't really get any good ones, but I surfed Pipe a bunch and I finally started getting some fun ones.
Has there been anyone from O'Neill or Santa Cruz that has been showing you the ropes in the big stuff?
No, not really. It's just been me and my friends going out there everyday, and just trying to get waves.
What's this bra? You gettin' Merricks now?
Yeah, I ride for Merrick now.
Oh sick, getting some good freshies huh?
Yeah, I'm stoked! They sent some boards over here for me and they all worked really good.
