The hunt began Wednesday despite widespread international opposition and protests in Tokyo.Ric O'Barry, who trained dolphins for the 1960s show "Flipper" and helped produce "The Cove," traveled to Tokyo and delivered a petition of opposition, signed by 1.7 million people from 155 countries, to the U.S. Embassy. The activist, who also has produced an Animal Planet miniseries called "Blood Dolphins," was forced to cancel a trip to Taiji amid alleged threats from an ultra-nationalist group.
"I wish all these people could be in Taiji," O'Barry told The Associated Press. "It was too dangerous. The big losers are the people of Taiji."
Most of the dolphins corralled into the cove during the hunts are killed and processed for meat, but some specimens are sold live to aquariums. Japan allows the killing of about 20,000 dolphins a year and claims the hunts are an important part of the nation's culture and tradition.
Taiji, a community of about 3,500 and the birthplace of Japanese whaling, accounts for about 1,500 dolphin deaths annually. Its "oikomi hunting" practice of banging on metal poles to create a wall of sound to herd dolphins into the cove in preparation for slaughter is what drew worldwide criticism after "The Cove" was released.
"We will pass down the history of our ancestors to the next generation, preserve it. We have a strong sense of pride about this," town Mayor Kazutaka Sangen told the AP. "So we are not going to change our plans for the town based on the criticism of foreigners."
The first victims, about 20 bottlenose dolphins, were herded into the infamous cove on Thursday. The cove, with the help of netting, will serve as a holding pen. The actual killing of dolphins won't begin for about two weeks.
O'Barry, 70, and the group Save Japan Dolphins have produced a celebrity-studded public service video -- Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Robin Williams are just a few to lend a voice -- intended to tug on heartstrings and convince citizens who appreciate dolphins as intelligent mammals to become involved in the campaign to end the hunts. The video, which has been viewed by 500,000 people, is attached below. Please share your thoughts.

Also, what about the expression "shooting fish in a barrel"? Come on it's one thing to hunt but another to make it completely unfair. I don't like the idea of a beautiful creature being killed. And especially just trapped and has no chance to survive.

Dolphins belong in the ocean where they can be free and free from being killed. Killing such an animal including whales which are both mammals just like we are only they live in the ocean are both intelligent creatures. So that doesn't give them the right to kill such beautiful animals. Peta and whale wars it's a show on discovery channel you should watch what they do then you will see that both are giving their part and whale wars puts themselves in danger each day to save these whales they fight for these whales every day and are the only ones in the ocean doing so in an area that is prohibited from killing whales PETA also puts themselves in danger when they try to keep such things from happening. Whales and dolphins are mammals so doesn't that mean in a way they are killing a human being we are also mammals I am growing tired of the human race for one because that is all the human race ever wants to do and no it isn't in our nature we are not animals though we act like animals when we kill someone or act in a violent manner we are just as bad as apes I don't think we come from apes I know God created us and he created men from the earth and women from Adam's rib why we women have an extra rib and to be by a man's side not for him to step on. God didn't want us acting like animals and being stupid and killing intelligent animals it just goes to show that Japan does these things to make money not to carry on a tradition these animals are sold in black markets after they are slaughtered and killed in a brutal way the same as the whales. I know it's wrong to kill and it's wrong to kill endangered animals or animals such as whales and dolphins I already knew what Japan was doing with the whales because of Whale wars and PETA and other organizations geared towards saving these animals. I never knew about the dolphins being murdered till this was posted. So apparently they are getting the word out and doing something about it. And I join them in their cause.

To all the crazy vegans out there like Paul:
So you are telling me, that it's the lack of intelligence that validates killing animals? It's okay to kill a pig because it's dumb, but not a dolphin because it's highly intelligent? That is a stubborn way to set the boundaries.
Every culture or civilization has its own values and morals. The Indians believed that killing a cow is immoral because it is sacred. The Muslims do not believe in killing pigs. And here we have people like you that believe it is immoral to kill animals simple for their intelligence! How would you feel if some activist groups from other countries were to protest on our land against our diet of chicken, beef, and pork if it's against their dietary beliefs? I mean good god, it's practically a religion. Shoving beliefs down other people's throats, imposing values on others simply because you think it is right. If you don't want to eat meat, fine with me, but don't go pushing other people around.

Japanese cars may be made here (only some)) but the money goes back to Japan They have taken alot of jobs from our country because they have slave labor. I know that for a fact because my husband lost his job at GM to japanese cars only because they can sell they cheaper here they america made cars, not better. I don't have any kids, or grandkids, don't want to bring them into this world. I can't see how anyone in this country can buy anything Japanese after what they did at PEARL HARBOR The COWARDS. Now they want to pick on the dolphins that can't defend itself. If you have never looked into a dolphins eyes, do so and then tell me it's ok to slaughter them.

Who the hell do you think work in the auto plants here Mary Ann? AMERICANS!!!! I'm sorry to here that your hubby lost his job but that wouldn't of happened if the owners of US Auto companies weren't greedy increasing their paychecks while cutting jobs.
Glad though to here you don't have any kids, wont have to worry about another racist hicks in the world of the likes of you. Cowards? I give them a lot of respect for they didn't surrender in combat, they fought to the end even committing suicide so not to be captured. Did it disturb me for what they did at Pearl? Sure, but we also dropped to Hydrogen bombs on them killing more civilians then the entire war in the European theater.
No, you didn't say anything about cows, chickens, or pigs. That's because you don't want to know the truth about what you eat every day. We slaughter those animals for food and money just as the Tajia are doing with the Dolphins. The US slaughters more animals in a year then almost all the EU countries combined. And a good percentage of it is thrown out as waste. Did you know that almost 50% of beef is thrown out because it doesn't get sold in time? Of course not.

Funny how the opposition against Japanese dolphin hunting has transitioned from a regular activist movement into one that breeds bigotry and ignorance. Half the comments that criticize the Japanese have racial overtone, and even outright bigoted insults.
Mary Ann, you said people should watch "The Cove." If you watched it carefully like me, you would know that 98% YES 98% of Japanese people don't even eat dolphin and whale meat. I even noticed that you bring in completely irrelevant material (Japanese taking American jobs).
Moreover, Pearl Harbor was almost 7 decades ago! What you're going to hold a grudge against people that weren't even born at that time? Every major nation is committed a regrettable act against another in the past two centuries. EVERY.

We, human can consume anything in this world only if we are faced with starvation. We can only eat human being if we are in starvation situation. Dolphin killing in this case is inhuman because we have other choices to eat. Japanese who claim they can eat Dolphin because it is their culture, then it is also acceptable that African can kill and eat Japanese hot spring monkeys because it is the African culture to eat hot spring monkeys. Do Japanese get my arguement point? We, American are also guilty of humans killing in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are even more nasty than the Japs, because we kill people in Iraq and Afghanistan not for our consumption but in the name of Homeland Security. We are as guilty as the Japs or even more cruel than the Japs. We need to reflect on our nation human killings in other countries.

First off its clear there are alot of ignorant people on here who don't think about what's being said.First off this is a blog.WE KNOW WE WON'T CHANGE THE WORLD WITH THIS IT'S JUST OUR OPINIONS!! Second: I am a vet and know full damn well there are alot of fuked up people in this country that do fucked up things..oh and though there are alot of homeless vets most homeless have substance abuse or mental issues...Oh yeah..I was homeless twice in my life for short stints and not mental...yeah had a drug problem been clean for many years now...ty.Third:I LOVE MEAT NEVER SAID I DIDN'T OR PEOPLE SHOULDNT EAT IT!! People should sustain themselves however they can but I'd be willing to bet there is more profit than indigenous self preservation behind the dolphin slaughter.Fourth:We need to look at the big picture of our environment. The ecosystem works in certain ways with everything playing it's parts.Remove a part or too many of one part and it messes everything up for everything!!Fifth:Stop holidays...Is that what you got out of what I said???...Look at things in context here people!!! On a final note.....If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything...Goodnight.

Oh yeah...also lived overseas for 3 years and been all over Asia including Japan 5 times....I know other cultures are different...NOT INFERIOR OR SUPERIOR...Just different...I wouldnt want others to impose their beliefs on me but the Nazis believed the Jews,Gypsies, and many other humans were in fact subhuman and should die.....Was it wrond for the US and our allies to impose our belief that thats was wrong....We...the Nazis could believe what they want actually but their actions were wrong and you don't need to believe in God or anything else to know that! And protest is what created and built the USA and all we have today.....COME ON PEOPLE THINK BEFORE YOU TYPE...TRY THE TEN MIN RULE!

Mike, sit back, take a deep breath, and relax.
Nazis, we did what we did to free people that were being killed for no reason. Different from hunting animals for food. The American Army almost did the same thing to Native Americans until people realized what they were doing was wrong. And to this day Native Americans are still getting a bad rep.
Or nation was not built on a protest but in retaliation for a farmer being killed by a British soldier. The colonies actually sent an envoy to England to talk about peace when at the same time England sent troops over. IF teh British never attacked we still be part of England.

Mike you sound very very very stupid, and caps locking phrases doesn't help your cause. First of all, your "I know other cultures are different...NOT INFERIOR OR SUPERIOR...Just different." is totally bullshit because you just called them ignorant jap fucks a few posts above so don't try to play innocent.
Second, as you said, we should be able to eat whatever we want as long as its sustainable. Why do you think Taiji still does this? because it's all the village has ever known. Anything else would mean the village's downfall and collapse. It's an island; there's not much industrialization one can do on a f**king ISLAND.
And third, you are extremely ignorant/stupid to even begin comparing the slaughter of dolphins to the slaughter of the Jews, 'nuff said. Not gonna even bother wasting brain power to attempt to get it through your head that the two are on completely different levels, unless you're saying dolphins are humans now too.

Clarence,
Mike wasn't directly comparing the act of killing human beings to the killing of dolphins. It is a rebut to the comment of (roughly) "who are we to push our beliefs onto people". He was comparing the fact that what the Nazi's were doing was wrong as well as what the town of Taiji is doing is wrong and that beliefs were pushed on the Nazi's in order to get results. Beliefs and traditions change dramatically over a course of a lifetime. People quit the tradition of drinking alcohol and eating meat on a daily basis when it could be something they've been doing their whole life most of the time based off of the beliefs of the people closest to them. If a doctor told you that the regiment of smoking cigarettes for the past 10 years would eventually kill you would you change your tradition of smoking? Would you question him on who he is to push his beliefs onto you? I believe that was the message Mike was trying to convey with his post. That people have traditions that can be changed.
I understand that this could be a dramatic source of income for the town but this is basically a public event that anyone can see. You cannot compare this directly to the "slaughter" of cows/chickens/ducks or any other animals because people randomly cannot just gather a picnic and watch those events like they can in the town of Taiji. Another reason why you cannot compare this directly to the food processing industries is because there is a selection and control process that takes place in our industries. They do not just randomly just collect their entire product and process them all. They take in consideration the age and health conditions of their product. I doubt that they take in consideration if one of these dolphins could be carrying a virus that could transmit to the entire group of dolphins they are slaughtering when they spear them.
This is a slaughter and should be put an end to just like the whaling that this country does.

Traditions - the mulims have traditions. Should we let them continue their tradition of sharia law? I don't think we'd like it they continued that, especially in the U.S. This small Japanese village consisting of about 3,500 people has a tradition of killing about 20,000 dolphins/year. That's not quite the same as 2 billion muslims trying to subdue the rest of the world. In neither case do we want them to continue doing what they've always done because it would be detrimental to the rest of the world. As a retired Sailor, I've been around a bit, and I've eaten dog. (Disclaimer: I own six dogs, all rescued.) I didn't know it at the time, but I bought a BBQ shish-kabob from a street vendor thinking it was steak. That's what the vendor said anyway. But another Sailor who was stationed in this particular country told me it was really dog meat. Whatever, it was cooked just right and I liked it. So, why don't the 3,500 Japanese folks stop killing dolphins and just go down to the local fish market and buy some mahi-mahi steaks and throw them on the hibachi? The water in the cove would not turn red that way, they would still have their feast of "dolphin," the real dolphins would be happier, too, and PETA/ASPCA would get off their ass.
I also love cats (Disclaimer: I have five cats, two bought with money, American) and think they are gentle creatures. They are soft and furry and loving and bring me great delight. The only problem with cats is that their are so few recipes.

First off I'll say it again. We did not attack Germany due to different beliefs. We attacked them to free people that were be annihilated. There were actually a lot of people in the US that supported everything Germany was doing except for the killing of people not of the "Aryan race'.
Second, the part about not seeing slaughtering of cows, chickens, and soon. You can actually go see slaughter houses kill animals. I used to see it all the time when I worked on a farm. Some even have a viewing room.
Did you actually read the blog? It also stated that some of the dolphins are sold to zoos so apparently they do do a selection process.
This is really no different then what we do with our animals that we get our meat from. The only difference is we have more land for farms and don't need to use the sea as a source for major part of our meat source.

I dont like how its only when the cute and cuddly creatures are getting killed its an issue. people are such hypocrites today. dont kill the dolphins, but cows egh there not so cute. People pick and choose just to suit themselves. People and organizations like Peta and Greenpeace care more about animals than their human brethren and that is sad to me. Ok dolphins are cute, but in the end they are just meat. I dont have a problem as long as they dont go extinct from the practice and there are things in place to ensure breeding and a decent population. go ahead and kill some dolphins its not too different from us hearding cows to the slaughter and to all those vegans out there dont forget veggies are alive too!!!

Actually, we declared war on Germany because they were allied with Japan and Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor. Many in the United States Government were as anti- Semitic as the Nazis. We attacked them because if we hadn't they likely would have attacked us.
As to the comparing the old Norse tradition of "Sacrificing a virgin to the Gods" to a ritual hunt: it's not even in the same ballpark. (Though I must say that I don't recall in my studies of Norse culture there being any such tradition) What Taiji is engaged in is not a ritual hunt however, it is slaughter for profit. It isn't like the whale hunts conducted by indigenous peoples of the arctic circle where traditional weapons are used and every part of the animal has a purpose. They have turned that cove into an abattoir. There is no other way to describe it.
I only hope that this tradition dies out, like other barbaric traditions of the past...

If we let them kill off every animal just because it's supposedly tradition what about the tigers they kill for supposed things that doesn't even work killing endangered species in the name of tradition they do need to join the 21st century that stuff they do for tradition isn't the way that's in the past and they need to keep stuff like that in the past. And animals like pigs God didn't really want us eating pigs because pork isn't good for you yeah it's high in protein but it's hard on your stomach it causes lock jaw if it's not cooked properly and other things too. But one thing you are forgetting these animals we eat aren't exactly highly intelligent yeah they need to think about free range more instead of over crowding their animals but these animals come a dime a dozen and will never die out. Even wild pigs are over throwing communities and everything else. If we lose more animals in the wild it will cause a lot of problems. Over populations in some animals and those will over throw other animals put them into extinction so on and so forth till there is just a hand full of animals left in the wild the earth needs a certain number of animals to keep balance and peace amongst the animals. Ever thought of that for any of you that want to make stupid comments.

How many pets are euthanized ( meaning killed ) each year at pet shelters in the U.S.? Also look at the reason why they are being killed. Is it tradition? Is it for food? Nope. They just are "inconvenient". That's the high road for ya.

Why did I ever click on this site??? lol Look....some people totally got my point.Others didn't.Fine.Everything I used as comparisons were not meant to be nor did I consider equal to the killing of dolphins...lol Context people like I said. B2 project understood what I was trying to say exactly...along with a few others.Maybe I didnt word things well enough for everybody to understand.I'll admit I was wrong to call the Japs ignorant but nontheless what I was attempting to say was not that they were inferior or anything to that affect. And it's not everyone in Japan. If you looked into it many, many Japanese are also protesting the killings. So maybe I should have pointed my "attack" at Taji though I shouldn't have attacked at all.And I too was a sailor and seen plenty of dolphins and though they are cool looking I woulnt call them cute and cuddly. They can hurt a human just as easily as any predator on Earth. They do have above average intelligence in the animal world(which we ARE a part of) and we are depleting the sea of so many of it's rich resources and diversity we should keep ourselves in check.Thats basically what I am saying. As intelligent animals we should keep ourselves in check and regulated in order to help perpetuate the survival of the entire planet which ensures our survival. It's not so much the killnig of dolphins but the amount of dolphins compared to the amount of people that live in that one village.I have no clue what the market for dolphin meat is but I'd guess not huge and doubt it supports that village for the entire year...We regulate deer and other game hunting in this country..Something I have no prob with at all.Dolphins have enough problem,s getting caught in fishing nets without adding more stress to the population...So I apologise to the Japanese people for calling them ignorant(though all that means is uneducated or unknowing).Maybe I should have called them stubborn and greedy instead! lmao

Oh and to the "gentleman" who called me stupid.I am far from that thank you. This is a blog site and personal attacks and name calling towards one another is just silly and immature.I understand we get heated over things at times.I often do.But we are all entitled to our opinions and for the most part nobody is either right or wrong on their opinion but the facts and moral implications of everything in life speaks for itselves and that's where the implications and "right and wrong" come from.Oh yeah..and yes I looooove meat but yeah cow herds are extremely harmful to our environment and cows can be considered cute too. This argument has nothing to do with the fact Americans don't particularly seek and eat dolphins but we do cows so its ok to kill them! lmao They are domesticated along with the higly intelligent swine and became that way out of need for protein and because they were easier to domesticate and herd way back when.To stop killing and eating them would throw the whole nutritional and farming system off the human race as a whole, "in general", has spent tens of thousands of years creating for our survival. The dolphins aren't being killed for survival otherwise Id have no issue with it.I also agree we shouldn't push our beliefs on others......but in the case when the actions of some affect the many...ie:harm to the ecosystem/environment that we absolutley should push for them to change. Thanks and everyone had a fantastic day getting stressed out(me included) obver freaking internet blogs!!!!! LMAO ROFL LOL and the whole nine yards!

Every culture or civilization has its own values and morals. The Indians believed that killing a cow is immoral because it is sacred. The Muslims do not believe in killing pigs. And here we have people like you that believe it is immoral to kill animals simply for their intelligence or even because they are cute??! How would you feel if some activist groups from other countries were to protest on our land against our diet of chicken, beef, and pork if it's against their dietary beliefs?
Reply by mike lutz September 5, 2010 06:01pm PDTReport Abuse
vuhn...i went back and read some of your comments and you sound like you have a clue....but you should have read all of mine more throughly.I NEVER said it is immoral to kill an animal based on it's intelligence though humans are nothing more than intelligent mammals and most people would consider it immoral to kill a person...I only mentioned intelligence casue some argued pigs were intelligent yet we kill them.Only reason I brought intelligence up.Also many who are missinbg the point said many if us oppossed to the killings oppose it because dolphins are cute as oppossed to cows.I stated some people think cows are cute. lol I couldn't care less what people eat.I'll eat almost anything..or at least try once.My argument was more of sustaining the very delicate ecosystem in our oceans...and yes I know we all over fish the oceans. But that's precisely my point.Somewhere we have to stop and say ok enough is enough we need to make stricter regulations while still feeding the world in order to protect that valuable resource. And I know and also mentioned that alot of Japanese oppose it as well. It's one village in particular and they killo far more than they need to sustain themselves so clearly there is profit behind this which profit is not bad...wer all want to make money but when it affects others people and more importantly to our survival the ecosystem as a whole thats when people have the right to voice their opinions and try to create change. Not impose our beliefs but lets face it....With the exception of dictatorships, monarchies, military juntas, and countries such as Iran that are truly run by religious clerics the rest of the world...right or wrong...go by majority rules. Can there be tyranny by the majority?Absolutely but thats how todays world runs.....Oh and I apologised for my one derogatory comment towards the Japanese...I was heated at the time. lol

We, human can consume anything in this world only if we are faced with starvation. This is a valid universal acceptable belief to any human being in this world.
One thing we all must realize is that the rest of the world does not have the same standards we do for many and varied reasons. As you say, edjr, goat and horse are popular in the middle east, we eat buffalo here, dog is a staple in western Pacific countries and in some European countries. Not many countries around the world have the luxury of refrigeration like we do, nor do they have schools were they learn good hygiene habits, or how to safely manage a butcher shop without spreading e.coli. The reason many countries eat nothing but fresh is because they have no way to store food after a certain time has passed. We Americans are extremely fortunate that we have these things and can take advantage of them and don't have to eat dog or horse meat.
Count your many blessings and don't be so opinionated about what is wrong with the rest of the world. Sometime, they have no choice. And, no, we don't really rape the land. America has been the most effective and efficient country feeding the rest of the world for many, many years. There are detractors that say we use more than our share of the world's available resources, which is in a lot of cases true. But we also produce more for the rest of the world than any other country. We do what we do best, and no one can hold a candle to us. There is no reason to berate ourselves or apologize to the rest of the world for what we are capable of and have been doing for them for decades.

Private moon you are dumb really dumb because dolphins saved thousands of lives guiding ships to port for one how many cows have done that? a big fat 0. Dolphins have saved people from drowning taken them to land hmm how many of the animals we eat do that? 0. And these are wild dolphins not trained in any way it's because they relate to us we are mammals just like they are and they have feelings have you ever watched dolphins in a pod before? They play with each other interact with each other as if in a family they also teach their young wrong from right and teach them how to get food and all just like we teach our kids wrong from right. I would never want to see them killed in any way humans are barbaric not all but some are. Japanese are only in it for the money that is all they care for not the health safety and well being of their people which is why even today lead based paints are used in their toys and other things I wouldn't be surprised if they used lead based paints in their homes and on their playground equipment I am sure they do why else would they still have lead based paints. They intake more mercury than anyone I ever known it's amazing they aren't glowing or something. But look at their children of those that eat high mercury foods most of either downs syndrome or something worse or have deformities of some kind or mental retardation you name it they have it. It's so wrong it isn't just that killing these animals for meat that is being advocated but the health of their people as well. Japan defends anything that isn't good for their people but anything good for them they don't like. Hmmm Tell me who the stupid ones are again.

Hell, I don't care if they kill the damn dolphins or not, to me they are just the same as beef. Don't give me the 'they are not the same as beef' or some sort of vegan statement, in the end it doesn't reduce the killings in any way since most people eat meat. While I don't oppose the killings, I do oppose the serving of dolphin meat since they are poisonous to humans with their high levels of mercury,

Okay, here's a non "vegan statement" that will STILL prove your heartless ass wrong: Beef doesn't contain the extreme levels of mercury that dolphin meat does. They sell the mercury-infested meat at schools and other public cafeterias all over Japan which can make those who consume it sick. Especially the children eating it at school. Children are born with severe birth defect because their parents ate too much dolphin meat. And they don't realize the meat is the problem because THEY DON'T KNOW IT'S DOLPHIN MEAT. The meat is mislabeled so that people in Japan don't know they're eating dolphin meat. So even if you don't care about the thousands of dolphins being murdered, maybe you can have a tiny bit of sympathy for the humans who are suffering because of ignorant assholes like yourself.
Maybe next time you will grow some common sense and learn about what you're talking about before you make a jackass out of yourself.

Cows are not full of mercury and cause major mercury poisioning in the people who eat it. Dolphins on the other hand...they have EXTREMELY toxic levels of mercury and are truly unsafe to consume. Most cultures have traditions that are followed, but dolphin slaughter is just uncallef for. As the article states, there is a population of about 3,500 in Taji, Japan. So how is the 20,000 dolphins slaughtered for meat a year compare to those 3,500 people. If you watched "The Cove" maybe you would realize that much of Japan is completely unaware of what is happening in Taji, and when they are told about what does happen, they are completely against it.

Paul - I agree they are poisoning others with their killing of dolphins but when was the last time you had to slaughter a cow to eat a burger? Or a pig to eat bacon? Or a chicken to eat "nuggets"? It isn't the slaughter, its the greed. And that greed, my friend, most other cultures, learned from the good ole Americans! Maybe not the Taiji specifically....
I don't agree with what they are doing but until you slaughter your own dinner, consider some of your other comments.

I agree that there's many backwards, stupid, and outright primitive practices by many cultures and ethnicites throughout the world / becaus I've all over the world and have seen the strangest most backward sh¡t. But you know what if you´re not willing to go to war over it then leave it alone. Because to alter or change a cultural practice you most certainly need to go to war and dominate and subdue the people practicing it. That´s the truth to it. Myself, I'm not willing to go to war over an animal or something like that. If it's abuse of human beings I'm open for giving them a place of refuge, but you can't do that animals. If you know cultures like I do you'll that that's only way possble to alter that behavior. And even then they'll practice it covertly. It's next to impossible to change culture without conquering the people. Maybe the US should've made it part of the 1945 surrender. Even then it would've been hard to enforce. Don't let your emotions drive your politics. It's not realistic. I've seen some barbarian type things, and there's nothing you can really do other than offer help in your sphere, and that's it. Do that and maybe you'll feel better. Unless you're open to war, where you'll cause more savagery, leave it alone. Your feelings are understandable, but let common sense temper those feelings.

I will confirm getyourfactsstraight's comment. Outside of Taiji, not a whole lot of Japanese even know about this tradition. 1,500 dolphins killed in Taiji. How many cetaceans are killed in America's Inuit villages each year? Have you looked it up? That is allowed in the name of "tradition", also.

Let's HERD the killers in a netting, keep them in a holding pen for 2 weeks and then begin slaughtering them. This is just plain wrong. I understand the hunt if the population gets to be too many, but to bang on metal poles to get the dolphin's attention is just about as cruel as it gets. The sad part about all of this is that the Dolphin's are way more INTELLIGENT than the killers are.

Lots is wrong with it, Thomas wall. I, along with millions of other people, refuse to eat any meat that comes from an animal that has been penned all their life rooting in their own filth (why do you think they need to inject them with antibiotics?) and I am learning and becoming more aware of the practices used in slaughter houses. Antibiotics further complicate things because, along with injected hormones, can cause cattle to have mastitis...which means if they get the milk from those cows, that milk will have puss in it. Goes great with cereal. Organic sustainable farming and animal raising is making a come-back because people are sick and tired of the ill effects caused by eating pesticide/antibiotic/hormone-ridden food. There are ways of doing it right...may not be cheaper but its certainly healthier and my health is worth it to me.

Reply by technicality September 5, 2010 01:08pm PDTReport Abuse
mjhessling Maybe they haven't realized it yet because all of the dolphins that hear and respond to the banging DIE, and therefore can't communicate what happens when the banging occurs? Did you ever think of that? No. Probably not. This isn't like people being tricked to vote Republican every election, they don't immediately die after making the choice, therefore, other dolphins are incapable of learning the results of making that choice without actually making it, thus causing them to die, and rendering them incapable of passing on this knowledge. Please, use your brain once in a while. It'll make you SEEM smarter.

people need to grow up and stop trying to bully others out of culture and tradition that they've had for generations upon generations. what makes this practice any different then farmers and ranchers sending pigs, chickens, and cows to a slaughterhouse so that you can have that burger or steak or ribs or chicken tenders??

It's not 'culture', or tradition if the masses in Japan don't even know about it. Dolphin meat is being sold as "higher quality" whale meats in Japan. The meat is laced with mercury - more than 2000 ppm. Get educated before making comments.

yes it is culture. you are an idiot and nothing about society if you believe the mainstream determines everything about a culture. this village has probably been doing this before even their grandparents were born. and yes its high as hell in mercury but so is swordfish and you can get that anywhere almost in the U.S.

Reply by jennie sherwood September 4, 2010 05:23pm PDTReport Abuse
Almost all seafood contains mercury, but the dolphins have some of the highest amount of mercury than other sea creatures. Almost 2000 times more mercury than swordfish. Yes i said 2 thousand times. And the people of Japan are eating dolphin without even knowing it, due to fact that it's labeled and marketed as something else. I wonder if thats consider tradition too? And since dolphin meat is in no type of demand in Japan then the only assumption that they continue to do this is for profit reason, especially since they sell it and probably don't even eat it themselves. And let's not forget the fact that children eat mostly what they are fed by adults, not what they necessary chose to eat. And mercury is extremely more toxic to children that are developing, and even FDA safe levels for mercury still have extreme effects on children. Mostly in the brain. So even if your concern isn't for the dolphins themselves, there should be concern for the people and definitely the children that consume dolphin meat without complete knowledge of what they are putting in there bodies.

ok khaos - here is what is wrong with what you are saying.
they are doing it for money. the villagers / farmers of taiji get paid many millions per family, per year, to keep quiet about the dolphin killing.
it has never been "tradition" in japan to take a giant net, wrangle up a thousand dolphins, and then stab them repeatedly with harpoons until they bleed out. if this were some tradition, the japanese would know about it. and they dont.
lastly, it is different to kill dolphins than it is to kill chickens or cows. they are conscious beings, like humans, and are self-aware. many scientists believe that dolphins are smarter than humans, in their own right. right before you kill a cow, or chicken, it doesnt know that it's life is over. it doesnt have any understanding of finite life. dolphins do, and are afraid of death.
we should be studying them more, not killing them.

"they are doing it for money. the villagers / farmers of taiji get paid many millions per family, per year, to keep quiet about the dolphin killing. " what research do you have to back this statement up? no government can afford "many millions", even if they're in yen, to each family, stupid hick.
2")it has never been "tradition" in japan to take a giant net, wrangle up a thousand dolphins, and then stab them repeatedly with harpoons until they bleed out. if this were some tradition, the japanese would know about it. and they dont. "
You do know that "culture" and "tradition" does not exist only within ethnicities right? You know damn well that each family, whether it be American or any other, have their own mini 'traditions' that they keep. We're talking about a whole village here that started out their means of survival by hunting dolphins generations ago.
3)"lastly, it is different to kill dolphins than it is to kill chickens or cows. they are conscious beings, like humans, and are self-aware. many scientists believe that dolphins are smarter than humans, in their own right. right before you kill a cow, or chicken, it doesnt know that it's life is over. it doesnt have any understanding of finite life. dolphins do, and are afraid of death.
"

They eat horsemeat in France and Ireland, horses are cherished in India per Vedic traditions, not eaten. EATING PIG is as close to cannibalism as you get according to scientists sine biologically they are even more similar than any other animal, this is why they are disected in high schools through out US. Doesn't matter what animals are eaten, or how cruel their suffering in the farms, or fact that hundreds of million male chicks are killed while alive since they will not produce eggs 0 and how are they killed? Going thru metal blades! but what goes around comes around, the hunters will always become hunted. Guy above sd it perfect, we are monkeys, but even less intelligent, we may be at top of food chain since China invented gun powder, but we are heartless and God less, and that makes us less civilized than most animals. The Vedas state specifically do not eat other mammals, there are those animals which God gave to protect and help us such as dogs, horses, cows (irrigation, milk)...but that should imply to respect the utter uniquenss and beauty of most animals regardless of their intelligence, and dolphins have been proven to communicate to each other...and of course they are so trusting of humans just like most animals. God cursed the most innocent beings of the world for coming face to face with the human devil!

I have looked at everything in my house, and anything made in Japan has been thrown out, and I now look at everything I buy, If it is made in Japan, I do not buy it. Another thing we MUST do, and this is the most important part...STOP going to dolphin shows in captivity. 95% of the dolphins that are in the captivity around the world has come from this cove. lol, conner, if you're going to make a strong argument, try not to use racist terms. It tends to backfire on you. ;)
"We kill the cows instantly, while the japs on the other hand pretty much poke the dolphins until they finally bleed to death."
We Americans grow and inject cows, chickens, pigs, and who knows what else with antibiotics and hormones and stuff them in disease-ridden and crowded pens, while the Japanese on the other hand pretty much let the dolphins grow naturally.
"they even kill baby dolphins the same way. its just sick."
Like the lambs (which are baby sheep if you didn't know) we kill to have our precious lamb chops, amirite? :)

Good on you. The American condemnation of eating dolphins always bothers me, considering the vast majority of those opposed will shout their indignation over a plate of factory farmed bacon and battery-caged eggs...
The hypocrisy bothers me much more than a Japanese village hunting dolphins. Unfortunately, "Save the Pigs" doesn't get any support. Pigs can be as intelligent as they want - too bad they didn't evolve to be cute and cuddly. We'd be happy to save them if they had.

Die tree huggers! Who do you think you are to tell the japanese what to do? They have been doing it for eons, and unlike us Americans hold true to their ancestery and traditions. When was the last time any of you has even seen a porpoise besides in an aquarium, which is just as barbaric. We slaughter cattle, swine, poultry and all kinds of animals. What is the difference?

wats wrong with it Swisher00 is that dolphins are intelligent creatures, who have bothed saved ppls lives in the wild, and helped rehabilitate ppl as well. Plus, these dolphins killed in Taiji have a murcury level way off the charts, and its sold to the public, and to schools in japan. so their tradition is to poison their people, and kill intelligent life. And your saying there is nothing wrong with that?
Reply by swisher00 September 4, 2010 05:45pm PDTReport Abuse
OK cougar steve. LOL. If we just killed everything according to an IQ that would be ok? I don't like it much but hey, that's the way it goes. Your heart is bleeding all over the place. Do something about that.
Reply by orion moony September 4, 2010 05:47pm PDTReport Abuse
We kill extremely intelligent creatures every day in the good old United States.
Pigs are up there with dolphins, elephants, and chimps in intelligence. They'll recognize and respond to their own name within weeks of birth. They have long-term memory more acute than humans.
Let's stop killing dolphins.
Let's also stop killing pigs. Look into what a pig endures in its brief, torturous life on a factory farm. It's one of the most brutal, disturbing things you'll ever see.

Why is my heart bleeding haha? Not sure where that came from. But if you don't like it then why do you support it? There is nothing wrong with voicing displeasure about something you find inhumane. Oh, and the 'do something about that' line was pretty gay.

alright, youre against it because youre against the killing of intelligent life, do you know how many monkeys are killed each year due to scientific research on diseases, a hell of a lot. its their tradition who cares if they do it r not, they kill dolphns for sustenance not for fun. if they wer e killing dolphins just for fun then tehre would be a problem, just let it be

well, the difference is that dolphin meat has extremely high amounts of mercury in it, so is it not wrong for those fishermen to poison not only themselves , but their friends family, and the whole country of japan? maybe you should get your facts straight before you open your ignorant mouth.

nick here again, i am against putting down animals in shelters, only when it comes to those shelters who do so for reasons of capacity and other such nonsense, but putting down a dog or other animal for its health (to stop its suffering) or for behavioral issues meaning they cant be adopted so only other choice is to let them live the rest of their life in a cage i am not against. its all about quality of life. i am aware of other inhumane cases with other species of animals such as pigs, chickens, cows, primates, fish, horses, etc. and i speak out against it to. why do i only mention dolphins in this post? well lets see. its because this post is about DOLPHINS. not other animals. and swisher, i see dolphins every year in the wild with my own eyes because i make an effort to visit and see these creatures and others each year in their own habitat and not in a zoo.

Why can't everyone just mind their own business? Where in the world is it stated that the US owns every dolphin out there and anyone who kills them for food is a criminal? I think it's so ridiculous everyone thinks Japanese are horrible people because they kill dolphins to eat. Oh god forbid we kill an animal to eat it for food. Look at all the animals we kill to eat every day. Why does no one say anything about fisherman killing fish, shrimp, crabs, etc.. for food? How is herding up dolphins any different than herding up cows, pigs, chickens and using them for food? And what is this....*gasp* we use cows skin for clothing?? OMG the world is just sooooooooo barbaric. Grow up everyone. Dolphins are smart and beautiful..but they are also a food resource just as everything else we eat. If killing dolphins is so criminal in your eyes are you all going to write useless articles about how other Asian races out there eat DOGS. Why do they eat dogs? Well, because it's food not pets to them. Everyone has different views of the animals in this world. If it's not harming you or your safety, then get your nose out of the other countries' business.

Ok, except that they are highly evolved and intelligent creatures that help and befriend man in and out of captivity. Chickens have the brain of a pea and do not disarm mines in the water....in New Guinea (sp) they used to eat humans.....tradition? Custom? Leave them be?

Thank you, Paul. It seems to me, many uneducated people forget, dolphins are MAMMALS- like humans.
Reply by georgia halloway September 4, 2010 05:27pm PDTReport Abuse
Also, they are going to cause species to be endangered. When we eat chicken we have farms to ensure that the population of the animal stays high. I hate the way they farm for chickens, its pretty sick, but this way the species itself that is meant to be eaten stays alive.

Reply by phamasaurus September 5, 2010 12:00am PDTReport Abuse
Dear Samia,
Although you have a few good points I would just like to point out that not everyone thinks Japanese are horrible people for killing dolphins. For one, the only dolphin hunting that goes on in Japan is found in the town of Taiji. The difference that separates dolphins from cows is not only the fact that cows are breeded like no other, is that dolphins contain really high levels of mercury. When high levels of mercury are consumed, there is a possibility of mercury poisoning and nerve damage. Not only this, but dolphin meat is given to schools and puts children more at risk of mercury poisoning.
Not many people say anything about shrimp, crab or fish being caught is because it does not danger us (as selfish as that sounds) nor is it as cruel as dolphins being rounded up in a small cove to be slaughtered with spears in what could be a slow death. Cows being killed and dolphins being killed are both very inhumane considering how much abuse each of the animals face.
Even if the dolphin meat does not affect people in the US or their safety, it still affects the people in Taiji who are unaware of what the dolphin meat does to them. Personally, I would just like to spread the awareness of what dolphin meat can do to people so they stop eating dolphin meat, and as a result the dolphin hunts would stop.
Reply by j otsuki September 5, 2010 01:21am PDTReport Abuse
the dolphin hunt in japan has nothing to do with them needing the meat... its not about supplying food to their people, it is about being stubborn and not wanting to let the US tell them what to do. They don't want to seem weak. Stupid ignorant people... yeah "lets endanger an intelligent species, and the oceans entire ecosystem just to prove a point to the US." Ridiculous.

The U.S. is the largest consumer of the world there is our right alone. We may have the largest overweight in the world or the largest (ok here is the word)DEMAND of foreign products>let me remind all The process of Consumer and Demand who ever consumes is the one to demand>so would you like to help stop this things from happening then everytime you look at buying something then see who made it. If it was made by the countries who are doing something you don't like then buy something that was not manufactured by them. If Japan (I am targeting Japan not Taiji cause guess how affective it will be for Japan to say o.k. enough we are losing our customers< due you really want to help then look at the manufactors of what your buying and then when the price is so low think ohhhh maybe there was something in it or had to be made from something else(to make this would you ever really know what all is in anything you use>Do this and will all see the results then the American demand will go up cause of looking at a tag and decideing as a consumer should i buy this> or lets write a letter to all the companies in America usine Japan products and inform them i am not happy with what is going on and want you to find another supplier other than this country until this stops>what grocery store alone would inmpact Japan or fast food resturants could alone tell there suppliers ok until this stops we are no longer able to have a relationship with you all and move back to U.S. or somewhere where the consumer will be happy

Labeling something with the words "culture" and "tradition" doesnt make it right.
Perhaps we need to re-instate that tradition to make a point.

the sad thing is that people are not listening to eachother. we are all humans, whether we are african, causcasian, or asian, so thats why people should care. we are all apart of the HUMAN RACE! and what part of THEY ARE POISONING THEMSELVES DONT YOU GET! DOLPHINS HAVE HIGH LEVELS OF MERCURY. i have seen that posted on the page about twenty times, yet people are seeming to ingore this fact and banter on why or why not.i get the whole "but we eat animals too agruement" but do we eat animals that have high levels of posionous elements in it?( and if we are, i would be pissed at the people covering that fact up, as the japanese should be pissed at their government for covering up this) i think poisionous substances are a fucking good reason not to eat dolphins, not because they are cute, not because they are smart, because the japanese are hurting themselves and their children, and we should care if someone is poisoning their whole country, because we are all apart of this human race.

look killing dolphins is about as stupid as you can get...its not like the dolphins are killing humans, they arent doing anything except living and they get slaughtered for that...i think alot of people who agree with this need to wake up. you would like it if you werent doing anything and got killed for it...its all ridiculus! there are alot of other, bigger problems out there to focus on and people have to act stupid and go after defenseless animals...all of you who agree with this should be ashamed of yourselves!

and also a fyi to leonard schwalen and any others out there who agree with him...think about what your saying...your so concerned about what our country is using and as you so put it the "bleeding heart fucking liberals " out there that wanted everyone to feel sorry about the a-bomb. that was how many years ago...and its not a war we are talking about it the senseless killing of animals that doesnt need to be taking place tradition or not...i couldd see if they were using it strictly for food but they obviously arnt, which makes it all the more stupid to do. people out there all over the world really need to use thier brains...we were given them for a reason...its almost the sme concept as someone walking into your home cornering you and killing you with a spear...just for "tradition" as they put it...you wouldnt be very happy about that and neither would anyone in your family. people and animals get killed every day over stupid and senseless crap..why keep adding to the cycle? and our bleeding heart liberals end up putting these murderers in jail which is nothing but a building with rooms and food and tv all for free and people wonder why these murderers get out and kill agian...they dont have to pay for anything in jail no bills no job to worry about...seriously u think life in prision scares them think agian..and yes i know im off subject but this topic pisses me off as well...in my opinion if someone commits a crime especially a murder, return the favor..in otherwards do unto others as you would have done to you...instead of just sitting them in jail and saying "ok you did a bad thing now heres your free food and bed"...

hey im not saying the human race needs to be wiped out all im saying is that people need to start thinking a little better...and as far as minding our own business when did the U.S. ever mind its own business? we go over and drop bombs on people across the world that we are at war with or other countries are at war with and then feel sorry for them and give them money to rebuild thier cities that we just blew up...ive heard several times that the united states has turned into the world police...so agian i ask when do we ever mind our own business? even in our own country, we butt into other peoples lives, and are curious about what the rich and famous are doing and how they are living...think about all of that...if we were to mind our own business then there wouldnt be paparrazi...and we wouldnt be the world police trying to save the day across the globe...i love our military and everything they do...i support them completely but why are we trying to help countries that dont want our help? they have thier own religions and ways of doing things, just as we have ours...almost the same thing applies with the dolphins no one else is going to help them...and they cant help themselves...so why not lend a hand...atleast to keep the killing down to a minimum...i understand tradition but there is such a thing as over doing it.....
