Dirt Rider of the Year (DROTY): Dane Searls. There are a lot of talented dudes doing big things on dirt jumps, but who is doing that AND progressing further the discipline of dirt riding? Dane Searls is not only an intensely talented dirt rider; he is also a think outside the box kind of guy. He and Unit Clothing built some massive jumps down a hill somewhere in Australia (his home country) and he took some brutal spills including a lawn dart body compressor straight into the back of a landing... That's dedication to dirt. Watch the video (Giants of Dirt).
Flat Rider of the Year (FROTY): Matthias Dandois. I hate to pick last year's winner, and I hope there's no rule against winning the title again, but if you look at Matthias' performance this year... Nobody can touch it. He absolutely ended the competition at JoMoPro this year and his web edits are actually watched all the way through by kids who usually can't even get through a whole street riding web edit. I believe he also won every European flatland contest that happened... Masters and Fise and so forth.
Street Rider of the Year (SROTY): Ty Morrow. This dude hasn't even released a DVD part recently, but he's on fire in the streets. He has so much natural ability in sketchy, natural obstacles. He can hop higher than almost anyone, and do bigger tricks down bigger things. He also has the technical skills to round out his riding, and not just be a jump off your roof type rider. He came huge with the footage he had in the Federal web edits, he got picked up by Vans and did numerous web edits, and definitely came through with his project with Miles Rogoish, The Trip. Ramp Rider of the Year (RROTY): Tom Dugan. Some may disagree with my prediction here because he doesn't ride Dew Tour or doesn't do tailwhips and backflips or something like that, but I'm just going to break it down by the name. Ramp Rider of the Year means the riding of ramps, not ability to do tricks on them. I've seen Mike Spinner ride things other than a box jump... And it's ugly. And I believe this is why Chase Hawk won last year. I would put him up for a twofer but Tom Dugan has earned this nominee by far. Watch basically any video of him, Props Bio, Empire Jam, T1 Session, Rays session, and more... You'll see!
Racer of the Year (ROTY): Mike Day. Alright, I know Maris Stromberg is the favorite for this award and it makes sense because he beat Mike Day and seems to have won more races than anybody. But, being an American, I know of Mike Day better and like his general appeal as a racer. If I wanted to get children into racing I'd want them to meet Mike Day. Video Part of the Year (VPOTY): Nathan Williams. This is so hard to say because I haven't seen it yet. And I haven't seen some other DVDs yet, like OSS' "Football". This prediction is solely based on my knowledge of this rider and the amount of time "This Is United" has taken. I know for a fact they have been sitting on some incredible clips of Nathan and yes, I will be doing a DVD review as soon as it hits my porch. Nathan could also go up for street rider of the year, as well as team mate (also to be in "This Is United") Corey Martinez.
Video of the Year (VOTY): This Is United. I couldn't resist. Part of me wants to give OSS the benefit of the doubt because I love those guys' passion for videos and riding in general. However, with the duo of Nathan Williams and Corey Martinez and a slew of other good riders, the new United DVD is bound to be a high scorer, and in my opinion the top scorer. The trailer gives me the proper amount of goosebumps and the thought of Martinez and Williams' parts makes me want to ride my bike right now... That's what a BMX video is all about.
