Although this blog is normally reserved for us to make a few smart-ass remarks about pro surfing, today's post takes on a more serious role as we're reporting on a development in the 2008 murder case surrounding Huntington Beach's Dane Williams. Williams, a lifelong surfer who was 23 when he died, was working at the ASR convention in San Diego nearly two years ago as a marketing intern for Hurley International when he went missing. His body was later found in the gaslamp district of the city and his death was ruled a homicide by the San Diego Police Department. The case went cold for nearly two years, leaving family and friends heartbroken and dismayed at what could have happened. But recently, San Diego Police have charged Philong Huynh, 39, for the murder of Williams. It was also reported that Williams was sexually assaulted. The break in the case came after Huynh's DNA was linked from another sexual assault case. According to a report on NBCSandiego.com:
...[The suspect] lived 800 feet or about one city block, from the
site where Williams' body was found. An employee of a San Diego medical supply company, Huynh was arrested last Thursday afternoon and faces charges in both Williams murder and a similar sex crime earlier this summer, officials said.
Williams' family has not been available for comment.
According to a detective on the case, the break could not have happened had it not been for the other victim coming forth.
"I would say a tremendous amount of the credit goes to the sex crime victim in this case," said to Lt. Kevin Rooney of the San Diego Police Department.. "He was courageous. He was completely helpful with us."
