Now Read ThisWelcome to the RSS feed for the blog "Now Read This" owned by Burton Source: http://www.kontain.com/burton/ Stoked on Saturday - Maple BlondieSaturday, November 21, 2009 7:36am PST It’s pretty much winter now, so why is this post about ice cream? There are a lot of ways to answer that, but uh… come on, everyone likes ice cream, so why should we have to explain anything. Anyway, our friends over at Ben & Jerry’s have teamed up with team rider Hannah Teter to make a really cool new flavor of ice cream. Maple Blondie (as its called) is maple ice cream with little pieces of brownie in it, but that’s not really the point (obviously its from Ben & Jerry’s so its going to be good no matter what is in it). What is really the point is that, not only is this really delicious ice cream, but its for a good cause. Hannah has a charity called Hannah’s Gold that makes and sells maple syrup. All the profits from the syrup go to help fund various projects to improve quality of life in Kirindon, Kenya (Africa dude). A portion of the proceeds from this new ice cream will also go towards the cause, so you can eat all you want, and feel good about it. Ben & Jerry’s is having a contest to go along with the ice cream that will leave one lucky winner with a four day, three night, trip to the US Open at Stratton later this year. Check out the official Maple Blondie page for more info. Misty Nug: This is the first ice cream flavor made for a lady or an athlete, so its double unique. From a nerdy halloween to a frends filled opening day, he has been all over the place (or California anyway) the last couple weeks, so listen up. If you want to hear more from Mason, or actually hear him tell you how to cab 3 in the pipe, check out the part that he and Danny did in the new Transworld "20 Tricks" video. Mason is on the cab 3 and Danny goes 7, so yea, click here and learn all about it. Has your local hill opened yet? If it has, post some pictures, cause we want to see them. Whistler looks insane already. Misty Nug: Alaska has the longest coast line of any state in the US, Canada has the most of any country in the world. Just sayin... There were small boards and bindings or whatever, but nothing built specifically for the ladies- tShannon Dunn changed all that. On top of her unbelievably dominant competitive career, (which included a few x-games gold medals, a bronze at the Nagano Olympics, and countless other victories) Shannon also made huge strides for women’s snowboarding. She was the first ever to have a women’s pro model, first with Sims, then with Burton, and also helped to develop product specifically designed to a women’s fit, not just scaled down men’s stuff. A while back we caught up with Shannon to check in on life as a pro mom instead of pro rider. How long have you been riding?20 years. Where did you learn how to ride? My hometown, Steamboat Springs, CO. What board did you learn on? K2 Gyrator-I bought it after the first day I rented it. Where have you been riding lately? Northstar at Tahoe. Which riders inspire you? Dave Downing, Janna Meyen Do you have a favorite snowboard video?8 Tracks What are some of your favorite Burton memories? There’s a lot of great memories for sure! When I was signing my contract for Burton in 1994, they flew me to NYC to see Saturday Night Live. Seal was the musical guest. I had never been to New York, Saturday Night Live was my fav. show and Seal was one of my favorite artists. Everything seemed surreal. Anyway, I signed the Burton Deal-Haha! As far as snowboarding goes-My time on the Burton Team has been amazing. Burton is absolutely the best company to work with. They were so supportive of me and they do everything with such quality. All the photo shoots were hilarious and crazy. I think the craziest photo shoot I was at was in New Zealand-Erehwon. It’s nowhere spelled backwards. Let’s just say it was a place where the team could bond! We stayed in this place where each room slept 5 and the heat hardly worked. The snow wasn’t too good but on mountain we made a giant ¼pipe. We got helied up to the ¼pipe every day to shoot photos for like 5 days. You had to be there! I think Japan has always been my favorite spot to travel to for snowboarding. I love it!It was awesome to be able to travel around the world to compete, be on photo shoots, and be part of a team with amazing riders. Could you share a favorite moment in your life? My wedding day and giving birth (2 times) have to be 3 of the most indescribable moments of my life. If you want to see more of Shannon check out some of her video parts in the old Mack Dawg videos, or the all girls video "Hardley Angers," or tons more. Techknow Tuesday - How to get FREE lift ticketsTuesday, November 17, 2009 7:27am PST Everyone loves snowboarding, but not everyone loves paying for it. Really, probably no one even “likes” paying for tickets, let alone loves paying for them. Lucky for all snowboarders though, there are a few ways to work a free day of riding. We’re not talking about green passes, friends passes, bartered passes, invisible passes, distracters, double winks, or even hiking (which all may or may not work, but we can’t really condone them) but rather legit ways to get tickets. This year Burton is giving you two awesome ways to ride for free. The first is by getting a Get Lifted ticket. We already told you about this once, but in case you forgot- basically every Burton board that is more than $350 comes with a Get Lifted ticket. Using the internet and the serial number from your new snowboard will get you a free days worth of lift rides at any participating North American resort. Get more info, including a list of those resorts here. Right now you might be wondering “hey, what happens if I don’t buy a board over $350?” or maybe “what’s that other way to get a free lift ticket?” Well, believe it or not the answer to both those questions is the same. All Burton boards $350 and under come with a Go Snowboarding ticket. It’s pretty much the same as a Get Lifted ticket, except that in addition to a free lift ticket it also comes with a free lesson. If you think you are too good for a lesson, you can give this whole ticket/lesson package to a friend, its fully transferable. Learn more about Go Snowboarding, find participating resort, and learn how to redeem your ticket and lesson by clicking here. If you have any questions about either of these awesome programs, or if you have your own secret way of riding for free that you want to share with the world, leave it in the comments- you might just win yourself a copy of “The B.” Misty Nug: The worlds smallest horse is 17 inches tall. Founded by Jake Burton Carpenter in 1977, the company specializes in a product line aimed at snowboarders: snowboards, bindings, boots, outerwear, and accessories. The company's flagship store is in Burlington, Vermont. Snowboards are manufactured "10 miles (16 km) down the road." Aside from selling goods under its own brand name, Burton stores sell several sub-brands which focus on specific market niches. These sub-brands include Anon Optics (snowboard goggles and eyewear); RED (helmets and body armor), and others that manufacture outerwear and footwear. In 2005, Four Star Distribution sold four of its snowboard brands to Burton, including Forum Snowboarding which designs hardgoods and softgoods, outerwear and streetwear. Burton, a privately-owned company, also owns a surfing distributor. In February 2008, Burton acquired DNA Distribution, which includes the skateboard manufacturer Alien Workshop, and two other companies. In 2008, the winter sports industry had grown to $487 million. Burton had 40-70% of these sales, depending on the category. Carpenter first made snowboards by hand in his garage. He couldn't afford the proper equipment -- so he applied polyurethane wearing a scuba mask. His co-founder Dimitrije Milovich, was an East coast surfer and founder of Winterstick. In 2008, a number of complaints arose when Burton produced snowboards with topsheets illustrating self-mutilation and Playboy bunnies. The company started using a single-channel binding-mounting system on its 2006 models. In 2007, this system was installed on other snowboard lines. A binding system was offered with this system. The bindings were designed to give the rider more control as well as greater board feel. |
