James was forced to withdraw from the 3rd day of racing the Bercy Supercross (Paris, France) and forfeit his potential win as a result of contracting a severe case of food poisoning. Upon return to the United States and his home base in Florida, James took minimal time to recover before getting back into an aggressive training and testing program for the upcoming races and 2010 Supercross season. After recent medical evaluation, his Doctor and L&M medical staff found his immune system to be dangerously compromised and James was advised by his Doctor and Team that he should discontinue any strenuous activity and not travel out of the country at this time. When asked about the decision, James had this to say: “I am really bummed about not being able to race in Italy and Australia. I’ve had such a great experience racing internationally. The fans are incredible and the race organizations really go out of their way to support me racing. I really wish I could still go but after talking with my doctors and team it’s not in my best interest to jeopardize my health before the long Supercross season starts.” Said Larry Brooks, Team San Manuel Manager “At this time, James will be focusing on getting healthy and preparing to defend his Supercross championship title. Taking time to improve his health and well being is our first priority.” James will continue to undergo medical evaluation and refrain from any kind of strenuous training activity until his Doctor and medical staff advise he is fit to resume. In fact, on New Year’s Eve at Red Bull: New Year. No Limits., the action sports superstar will step on the accelerator and ring in 2010 by adding yet another jaw-dropping feat to his already impressive resume: the world record for longest distance jump in a rally car. Add a healthy dose of the Pacific Ocean to clear, and now you have a party! Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. will be televised live on ESPN/ESPN HD on Thursday, December 31, immediately following the Chick-Fil-A Bowl (approx. 11:00 p.m. ET / 8:00 p.m. PT). Viewing of Pastrana’s jump will be free to the thousands of revelers in downtown Long Beach. “I’m looking forward to being part of Red Bull: New Year. No Limits.,” said Pastrana. “Long Beach will continue the tradition of a fun and festive environment for this New Year’s celebration and flying over the water in a car and landing it onto a floating barge will push the limits of anything that I have ever executed in my career. Live events are always difficult and more entertaining, both for the fans and the participants, and so many factors play into the success of this jump. I live for this kind of excitement.” Joan Lynch, ESPN vice president, content development, added, “We are thrilled to team again with Red Bull to televise this live and exciting event on ESPN for a third year. ESPN is dedicated to bringing live and compelling programming to the viewer and no New Year’s show delivers more unique suspense and action than Red Bull: New Year. No Limits.” NOT SINCE THE JETSONS WILL A CAR FLY SO FAR Before the clock strikes midnight on the East Coast on December 31, Pastrana will attempt to accomplish the first ever ramp-to-ramp car jump over water, a feat that will test the laws of physics and take his career to yet another level. With the world-famous Queen Mary docked in the background, Pastrana will jump his rally car off the Pine Street Pier onto a floating barge anchored in Long Beach’s Rainbow Harbor, aiming to shatter the existing mark of 171 feet and establish a new world distance record, live on ESPN. Jumping a car takes guts enough, but add water between the ramps, and Pastrana will feel what most, if not all, golfers feel when faced with hitting a ball over water – stay out of the water! On New Year’s Eve, Travis is not only the golfer, but also the golf ball! THREE’S COMPANY Pastrana will follow in the footsteps of fellow motorsports athletes Robbie Maddison and Rhys Millen, who rang in the last two New Year's Eve celebrations by pushing their physical, mental and technical limits to break boundaries and records, in front of thousands of fans in Las Vegas and millions of viewers on ESPN. A full house of fans, athletes and celebrities gathered at the Avalon Hollywood to pay tribute (and to poke a little fun), at all that Pastrana has contributed to the world of action sports at Red Bull Toasted. The event was a surprise to Pastrana until he arrived at the venue in a restored English double-decker bus, but the presenters were more than ready to give Travis a ribbing (with love, of course).
Travis took his licks in good spirits, saying "It was epic to have so many of my friends and family come out tonight. When Red Bull does something, they do it huge. It was a roast and it was funny, but there was a lot of respect. I couldn't have asked for anything better. Going into X Games, all I've been thinking about over and over is Best Trick, the Rodeo 720, if you will, and tonight distracted me in a really good way." Red Bull Toasted featured special appearances by several iconic friends and family members of Pastrana. Video montages showcased his life and career – his highlights and even his goofier moments. Roasting and toasting Travis included: Arj Barker (Flight of the Conchords), Tony Hawk (skateboard legend), Sal Masakela (Host of E! Daily 10), Brian Vickers (Red Bull Racing NASCAR driver), Greg Giraldo (comedian and Comedy Central roaster), Dan Levy (comedian), Ryan Sheckler (skateboarder and star MTV's Life of Ryan), the cast members from MTV's Nitro Circus, including Andy Bell, Jeremy Rawle, Gregg Godfrey and Jolene Van Vugt, Kelley James (singer), Debbie Pastrana (Travis' mother), Robert Pastrana, (Travis' father) and Carey Hart (motocross star). Spotted at the event were Audrina Patridge and Brody Jenner from MTV's The Hills, Verne Troyer, Ryan Cabrera and Steve-O. Fellow athletes in attendance included Robbie Maddison, Ronnie Renner, Mat Rebeaud, Ashley Fiolek, Tarah Gieger, Levi Sherwood, Lance Coury, Ian Walsh, Sandro Dias, Daniel Dhers, Kevin Robinson, Parks Bonifey, Corey Bohan and Corey Martinez, in addition to Vickers and Sheckler. Highlights of the night included a fierce thrashing of every celebrity in the room by comedians Dan Levy and Greg Giraldo, most of which cannot be repeated without a "bleep." Kid Rock (via video) recounted a New Year's Eve party which ended with Travis BASE jumping from his suite in the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, a bewigged Troyer made a surprise appearance on-stage and almost every roaster made a point to describe Travis' amazing motocross ability...and complete lack of skills with women. The guests in attendance were also the first to hear "what's next" in Travis' career. He was passed the torch – or in this case, the steering wheel – and will be the star of the 2009 Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. New Year's Eve event, live on ESPN.
