As the new, IOC-recognized, National Governing Body for the sport of Surfing in the USA, Surfing America is responsible for holding the USA Championships event each year and for selecting the Official USA Surf Team to compete internationally.

There are currently three member organizations that feed their top athletes into Surfing America's USA Championships. They are: The National Scholastic Surfing Association, the Hawaiian Surfing Association, and the Western Surfing Association.
