No way. ![]() Hard to believe, but yes, totally true. Summer shredding on the snowfield on Mt. Hood is officially over for the 2011 season. For seven weeks campers and pros made memories of lifetime by shredding slush, crushing concrete and getting hyphy at camp cookouts and events. It was just way too much fun for our little brains to handle, so read on for the full recap of the antics from Windells. Words: Windells It's official: 2011 summer snowboard camp has come to an end. The towropes have stopped, the rails have been taken down, and everyone's boots will finally be given the chance to dry out. It's always sad to see the season go, but lucky for everyone at Windells, Session 7 was one of the best summer finales that we could have asked for. The weather was super sunny and there was tons of snow, so it was perfect both on hill and in the Concrete Jungle. Campers, visiting riders, and staff spent every moment shredding, making sure to squeeze the most fun out of the session before it was over. The Technine Team hosted Session 7. Derek Dennison, Dylan Thompson, and Andrew Brewer were joined by Ben Bilodeau, Zander Blackmon, Brady Larson, and of course, Marc Frank Montoya. In true T9 fashion, the team went hard, both on hill and off, riding, filming, and putting on tons of games for campers. Here are a few highlights from the last session of the summer: - The Windells Diggers added more features to the rail zone and the Technine crew held a competition for campers on the prism wedge, Jersey barrier and down tube. Dylan Thompson did an impressive mini handplant, Derek Dennison helped campers learn switch ollies, and Andrew Brewer emceed. - The Second Annual Technine Doughnut Eating Contest went down in the courtyard. Derek and Brewer officiated and Dylan competed, consuming at least 12 mini doughnuts before the powdered sugar started flying, coating everyone in a snow-like layer of sweetness. - Dylan Alito was at camp and put on a Hobo Shred Wear backflip clinic with Brandon Hobush. Campers and staff hucked away the afternoon, learning backflip variations, while a small crowd hooted and hollered. It was definitely summer boardin' fun. - To close out the session, MFM DJ'ed a Skullcandy dance party for campers, which included a breakdancing competition. A couple of campers threw down with moves that could have passed on any MTV dance-competition show and one lucky guy won a Technine snowboard. It's been an amazing summer at Windells, but the fun isn't over yet. There's tons of skating to be done and winter camps begin in December! Session 6 at Windells is over and out which means there's only one session of camp left this summer.Shenanigans right? Summer flew by this year, partly because of all the fun in the sun everyone was having up at Mount Hood. Session 6 looked to be one of the best weeks of camp to date with the Rome Team stomping through and staking their claim. Big shots such as Bjorn Leines, Johnny Lazzareschi, Lucas Debari, and Marie Hucal, spent the week slaying the park and getting jibtastic on the plethora of rails. Session 6 was a hard-rocking, rip-roaring, rager on the glacier. Check the fun, son. Words: Windells Windells Session 6 was sunny. Every day. As everyone's levels of vitamin D increased with the perfect weather, so did the smiles, high-fives, and appetite for summer shredding. The end of summer couldn't be better; there's so much snow that we're still riding all the way down the mountain and the Windells park is out of hand. It's got the feel of a good skatepark, with various ways to hit everything, lending to some impressively creative shredding. There are tranny finders and tube lines, running both across and down hill, the jump line is lapable, and there's now a quarterpipe at the end of the park. Thank you, Diggers! Even though summer is coming to an end, there's no shortage of radical summer snowboard vibes at Windells. Here are some of the highlights from Session 6: 1. It was Rome Week at camp and the SDS brought the Summer of Shred '11 to camp. Bjorn Leines, Johnny Lazzareschi, Lucas Debari, Marie Hucal, and the AmArmy shredded both on hill and on campus. Ever wanted to learn how to do a back 180 with help from a legendary 'boarder? Bjorn Leines was on hand teaching campers the finer points of spinning their snowboards. Epic. 2. Johnny Lazz was back on campus, megaphone in hand, and all was right at Mount Hood. Even though Lazz may not necessarily need a megaphone to blast his familiar laugh through Mount Hood National Forest, camp is always better when he's mic'd up. Lazz and Lucas held a Rome knockout game, showing off their own basketball skills, while trying to knock out campers. 3. The Flow Team was at camp, too, including Tim Humphreys, Brandon Reis, Nial Romanek, Shane Fortier, Sarka Pancochova, and the Flow Microns. The Microns rode in a swarm around the park, a line of short rippers hitting everything in front of them. Flow gave campers a leak of their new team movie, showing not only the teaser, but also some extra footage and bail shots direct from Tim Humphrey's private clip stash. Tim also showed his newest GoPro edit, before anyone else got to see it. 4. Dylan Thompson and Jonah Owen held an ultimate tube session up on hill. Rumored tricks that went down include a back three on back five off, and cab five on back three off...maybe even back five off. Video footage to be out soon. 5. The Rome Team hosted the most rock 'n roll Thrasher Night of the summer, you could practically hear the air guitar solos. Then, they put on face paint for Zombie Dodgeball and then, Bjorn hosted the most extreme egg/spoon race ever seen at summer camp, with tons of obstacles and prizes. The week was packed with hilariously fun activities! There's one session left and the Technine Team will be at camp, so check for lots of updates at www.windells.com and start planning for next summer to come hang out with us! Channels: Snow Windells Session 5: Sun and Fun at Hood Every week just like clock work, Windells sends the latest and greatest information from the most recent session of summer shred camp. As the weeks wear on, so does our jealousy from reading about all the awesome things campers and pros are getting into. Session 5 just wrapped up and Eric Willett, Austen Sweetin, Jonah Owen and Cam Pierce were the purveyors of fun and spent their days lapping the park and sending it through the concrete jungle. Sounds like they had a blast, and it's clear things are still popping off at Hood, so read on for all the action you may have missed. Words: Windells Summer's more than halfway over and at Windells, we're trying to figure out where the time has gone (it probably has something to do with all of the snowboarding and skating we've been doing the last two months). It's sunny out, there's tons of snow, and each week the park keeps getting better and better. Session 5 just came to a close, and if you missed it, here's what went down. The Windells Diggers went all out with the park for the session, building lines of inventive features. The top of the park had a skatepark feel to it, with a plethora of rails and transitions: flat bar to stairset, perpendicular 't' tubes, and a corner line off the side of a jump with a pole jam to down rail. Each day campers and pros lined up alongside one another to ride the towrope and get as many laps in as possible. ![]() Eric Willett, Austen Sweetin, Jonah Owen, and Cam Pierce were at camp, snowboarding, skating, and paling around with the campers. During the day, they lapped the park, hitting the top jump and rail set up. Not a rail, jump, or bonk was left untouched by these talented shreds. Eric and Austen put on a jump clinic one afternoon, teaching campers grabs, spins, and backflips. Back on campus, the activities were endless. Whether it was wet or dry out, there was skating to be done, dodgeballs to be thrown, and games to be played. Austen skated for at least four hours every night. We're not sure where he gets his energy, but it could be the multiple iced coffees and Red Bulls we saw in his hands every day. Eric held a game of "back tag," where campers had to stick stickers on each other to win gear--campers tried to best Eric in the game, and even though no one could beat him, Eric still gave out tons of prizes and everyone was stoked. The pros took over the foam pit in BOB one evening for a jousting competition, where campers chose the rider they wanted to compete against. "I can still get beat up by twelve year olds, even though I'm twenty years old," said Austen. "A lot of the campers wanted to hurt me, but I think it was in a good way." Session 6 is the Rome Session. Stay tuned to www.windells.com for updates and more! Channels: Snow Windells Session 4: Ski and Snowboard As if you needed any more reasons to get your buns up to shred camp at Mt. Hood this summer, Windells just released videos from Session 4 to tempt you even more. The weather on the glacier has been as good as it gets which enticed tons of pros to get out there and shred under the sunny blue skies. From Louie Vito and JJ Thomas on the snowboard side of things, to Tanner Hall and Keri Herman on the ski side- Session 4 was all time and filled with mega-bangers. There's still plenty of fun to be had at Hood, so why don't you pull the trigger and rally up there for Session 5 or 6. Do it. Words: Windells Throughout the ages, there have been many foursomes that have defined sensibilities, innovated trends, and affected generations. In the sixties, The Beatles revolutionized rock music. In the eighties, Dr. Peter Venkham and the other Ghostbusters saved a legion of citizens from getting slimed. Flash forward to 2011, and it's a fair comparison to say that Nick Visconti, Curtis Woodman, Jason Robinson, and Stevie Bell combined their collective radness and gave campers at Windells the best summer snowboard experience they could ever want. The group may seem, at first, to be an unexpected foursome, but during Session 4, their unique personalities and boarding styles combined seamlessly, creating a powerhouse of fun. From morning to night, the guys were all over the place, harnessing the same energy of a whole cabin of campers. Tons of park laps, hours and hours spent in the Concrete Jungle and BOB, backflip clinics on hill, powerslide contests off hill, Bonfire Pipe 2 Pipe, and the biggest, most intense, game of knock out you have ever seen (Stevie could probably play defense in the NBA). But don't take it from us, here's what the crew had to say. ![]() "Our session involved snowboarders from all types of backgrounds and different styles. No matter what you're into in snowboarding: taipans, tight pants, baggy pants, rails, jumps, backcountry, there's people that are experts are in all of those fields. There really wasn't anything you couldn't learn or get involved with. It made me feel like a kid again." - JRob "Session 4 was so fun because everybody was friendly, super stoked to be at camp, and had a good time, whether it was on hill or on campus: product tosses, the sickest skate competition I have ever seen in my life, and wonderful dance parties. I had an amazing time hanging out here. I'm exhausted from all the skating, snowboarding and activities. I'm gonna go take a nap for a couple days. - Stevie "We had a really good group of people. Everyone was down to have a really good time on and off hill and there's always activities to do, rain or shine, whether it is basketball, tetherball, playing pool, or skateboarding. You're moving and doing fun things the whole session. Sleepy Bear needs a nap." - Curtis "Windells helps me keep my girlish figure and fit into my skinny pants. I can't even eat enough good food fast enough, because I burn off so many calories skating and snowboarding all day. Screw Jenny Craig, I need Windells." - Nick Session 5 is next and will be filled with even more shredding, skating, and fun! Snowboard Session 4 Ski Session 4 Channels: Snow Bonfire Pipe to Pipe 2011 Snowboard contests from coast to coast need to take a tip from the annual Bonfire Pipe to Pipe. The contest recently ripped through Mount Hood for the 14th year in a row and it was one of the rawest and wildest to date. The competition is notorious for its unpretentious vibe and centers around rowdy riding and good times. This year Snowboarder Magazine's Tom Monterosso was on scene to break down all the glory of this shredtacular summer event. Words: Tom Monterosso A lot of contests these days just aren't fun to watch. The rapid evolution of snowboarding has made modern-day contest riding to seem static, in my opinion. Double corks are now stock tricks and style has been amalgamated and condensed. They all look the same. Set up turn, Cab 12 double cork; set up turn, back 10 double cork, so on and so forth. It just kind of bores me. But this weekend, up on the Windells lane on Mt. Hood, contest riding scored a big one in my book. The 14th Annual Bonfire Pipe to Pipe happened. It was hectic. It was loose. And it was really fun to watch. The Pipe to Pipe is the longest-running summer snowboard contest in the world. For fourteen years, riders have gathered on the glacier overlooking the Timberline lodge and rode a fun, unique setups that lended more creativity than your average rail, rail, box, triple line courses. This year, the folks at Bonfire decided to tip their hat to the days of yore, deciding to pepper two mini pipes set back to back with jibs. Get your butt over to SNOWBOARDER MAG to read the rest of the recap and watch TWO videos of all the fun. Do it. Channels: Snow |
