Genichi Kawakami set the stage for Yamaha Motor Company's success with his vision and philosophies. Total honesty towards the customer and making products that hold their own enables the company that serves people in thirty-three countries, to provide an improved lifestyle through exceptional quality, high performance products.

Genichi Kawakami's history with Yamaha was long and rich. He saw the new corporate headquarters in Cypress, California and the 25th Anniversary of Yamaha become a reality in 1980. He also watched bike #20 million roll off the assembly line in 1982. Genichi passed away on May 25, 2002 yet his vision lives on through the people and products of Yamaha, throughout the world.

James, out. It was one helluva weekend of racing (and crashing) over in Phoenix last weekend, and the result is a complete shake-up of pre-season expectations. It really all started when points leader and defending champ James Stewart skipped the second timed qualifying session. That’s a highly unusual move, and the semi-official word out of the L&M pits was that since James had already set a seemingly unbeatable fast lap in the first session, that he didn’t feel the need to go out again and back it up. The other word was that he felt like the track was “beat” and didn’t want to put himself at risk by riding any more than necessary. Still another report was that something was wrong with him - sickness, injury, whatever. Bottom line was, James skipped it, got an uncharacteristically bad start in his heat race that forced him to make a questionable move on the first lap that resulted in an injury that will likely keep him out for this weekend’s racing. Of course, that also means he’ll have a much tougher time making up those points further down the road and, well, he’s probably not going to be able to defend that #1 plate.
Truly just happy to be out there racing again, Langston looks completely terrified in this shot doesn't he? He's not yet up to speed, but the former double Lites champ seems to be motivated to race into his previous form. He's now the sole rider working out of the JLaw racing rig, which is probably a mixed blessing in this case. Grant crashed pretty hard in the main and took a couple of laps to get going again, but he did finish, and that's his stated goal - to finish every main event.
Ivan The Excellent. Tedesco's doing well this year. He's RIGHT THERE, itching and pushing for that final podium spot, and apparently happier and healthier than he's been in a long time. Ivan was the middle man between the leaders and the chasers at Phoenix, ending up 4th in the Main and is now sitting 6th in points.
Easing back into the near-present, this shot of Josh Hill says a lot of things about the Lakewood National. 2008 was the first year ever for a night National Motocross race, and the Saturday before they held a practice session so everyone could test out the lights, ruts, etc. All of us photographers were absolutely salivating over the prospect of getting all these guys out there in the dark for some unique to that point shots with off-camera flash. I carried my Quantum X2D up there and put a softener on the big dish so it was like a beauty dish and bodda-bing, this is what I got. I like it, I dunno about you, and apparently THOR did too since it ended up as a huge print on their tower at Loretta’s that summer. Canon 1Ds Mark 2, 17-40mm. (Jeff Kardas Photo)
Remember when Doug Henry went out on a borrowed CRF450 and won the opening GNCC several years ago? Then, after giving precisely 101% of what he had available to give, he collapsed at the line and had to get an IV before he could hit the podium? Well, this is right after he sort of started coming out of his stupor while still laying on the ground after the finish line. Doug’s a stud, and is one of an elite few to top the mighty Juha Salminen during his U.S. tour. (Jeff Kardas Photo)
My man Robbie Jenks, pre-KTM days. One helluva GNCC and Hare Scrambles rider, born and bred in the hills of Southern Ohio, Jenks is a good dude too. He called me with an urgent request for posters for a quickly approaching season opener, and my response was “uh, there’s like 2’ of snow on the ground man”. His reply? “I got studs”. Enough said, so I hauled on down to Nelsonville and we pulled his near-factory YZ250 (with studs) out of his van and he took about 10 passes around a field and we called it a day. This was one of a bunch that turned out pretty much epic, and a very cool and unique poster was the result. Canon 1V-HS, Fuji Velvia 100, 70-200mm. (Jeff Kardas Photo)
More Metzger. It’s funny how I ran into him several times throughout my little career, and he always delivers great moments to be captured (see next image too). This one has a really long backstory, but suffice to say we were in Costa Rica for a Yamaha WR press intro while he was there doing the first-ever “Epic Ride” for Speed or wherever it ran. I was sitting backwards on a 4-wheeler for this shot, moving along at around 25mph. Canon 1D Mark 2, 17-40mm. (Jeff Kardas Photo)
