The end of the year is winding down, with most of us looking to what the future holds with anticipation (and hopefully excitement).
With 2017 on the horizon, it’s time to address the elephant in the room for many action sports enthusiasts: our general lack of representation in the world of emojis.
With the start of 2017, surfers can rejoice; the “shaka” emoji has been added to the list of items slated to be included in the iOS 10.2 update.
We have the classic surfer and bicyclist, (congrats, you guys) but the rest of us are woefully under-represented, and it’s time to demand change.
Here are seven action and adventure emojis we’d love to see in the new year:
It seems obvious, doesn’t it? A skater being included in the sports category of emojis doesn’t seem like rocket science, but I acquiesce; drawing a deck may be harder than I make it out to be.
However, if we can have a unicorn included in our emojis, I don’t think a skater is too much to ask.
The Motocross Rider
How can we possibly get our “braaaap” on without a designated emoji?
Up until now, it’s been a real struggle, and for those days when you’re trying to rally the crew for a good trail sesh, it’s been almost impossible to convey message without physically typing it out, which we all know is the great struggle of our time.
When asked whether they enjoy a nice hike once in a while, most people will respond with an enthusiastic “Sure!”
Why is it then, that we have no hiking emoji? A mainstay in the adventure sports world, hiking is an activity that anyone can enjoy, from the most core athlete to the mainstream citizen looking to expand their horizons.
The Standup Paddleboarder
With its rise in popularity over the last few years, it would seem natural that SUP would make it into the new round of emojis recently released, right?
Wrong, apparently. In what we consider the travesty of the 2000’s, SUP has yet again been left out in the cold on the newest round of updates. How will all of our fellow SUP athletes caption the Instagram photos? The future is unclear, but 2017 brings hope for change.
With tiny houses, camping and living within your means grow more popular by the day, we have to wonder: why is there no Airstream emoji?
They’re cool, they’re functional, and more and more people are living in them these days. It makes sense that we should have one.
Maybe 2017 will be our year.
