Here are the winning images from the 2016 Red Bull Illume photo contest

Despite being only the fourth edition of the contest, the Red Bull Illume is already a renowned action and adventure sports photography competition. 2016’s winners were just announced in Chicago, Illinois this week and the winning images are nothing short of breathtaking.

11 category titles were up for grabs, as well as the overall winning image. 5,646 photographers from 120 countries submitted 36,624 images. Categories included Energy, Close Up, Enhance, Lifestyle, New Creativity, Mobile, Playground, Masterpiece, Sequence, Spirit and Wings.

In the end it was the duo of BMX rider Senad Grosic and German photographer Lorenz Holder who took home the most hardware. Holder won both the Playground and Masterpiece categories (which were images of Grosic), as well as the Overall Winning Image title for his reflective shot of Grosic riding his bike over a bridge during fall in Gablenz, Germany.
